trans flush. do it myself or pay for it??

Post by J_Dub »

I want to give the auto trans in the R50 terrano a service.
Should I do it myself, drain oil, replace filter, fill with new oil or pay a shop to give it a trans flush??

Or is paying for a trans flush and getting the shop to do the filter as well the beter option?

I did mine myself, have a look on youtube for the hose in a bucket system.
It was very easy to do and saved heaps (money to spend on improvements instead of maintenance)

a trans flush gets all the oil out of your torque convertor, which a simple drain and replace won't do.
if you have a hoist, and spare time, have a go yourself.
The dirtiness of the oil also influences my decision as to which option i use on a vehicle.
BTW, in Toyota A340 trans, the filter is a steel gauze sheet, which can be cleaned and replaced- perhaps the nissans have similar? enquire.

I'm kinda with Mike on this.

I did a filter replacement and transflush myself on my t700 trans. Spent a couple of hours messing around and went through two and a half 4 litre bottles of atf. (I wasn't very efficient)

Worth paying someone a hundred bucks to do it (even though I assume they do not replace the filter for that price)

Arron.

A good trans flushing machine will also replace all the ATF in the valve spools, def worth it to have it done if it were me.

Cheers for the replys.
Where are you guys getting this $100 from? I've rung a place close to home and they charge $260 just for the flush

Haven't priced it myself, just going of the $99 in the post above, seemed good value.

I must have spent $180 on oil, filter, gasket etc. Add a little time and inconvenience. $150 still sounds ok. $200 not unreasonable, but probably about my limit.

I'd be a bit more confident of a auto trans shop doing a proper flush and service than a budget oil change shop that employs cheep unskilled labour it smells awfully like the skill base, service and standard you get from places like tonys tyre services :D

True true.

I will get it done properly eventually, for now think I will just do my own oil change, will look at a flush in a month or so
