Fitting steel front diff to escudo

Post by Green Machine »

Hey all. Can anyone give me a quick run down of whats involved/needed to fit a steel front diff to a 90 escudo swb manual.

Obviously I need the steel housing but what other parts do I need? I read somewhere about an axle or cv but have been searching for an hour and cant find the exact info.

If someone who has done it or knows can let me know that would be great.

Thanks!

You need the steel housing and the steel 3rd member.

You may need to swap the ring and pinion to make sure you have the same diff ratio front and rear. And also that the spline for your CV shafts is the same (22 spline vs 26 spline).

And make sure the 3rd member mount is the correct one (there are a few different types).

That's it.

But a lot of us also take the opportunity to change axle setup etc at the same time - it isn't essential.

So if I got a steel diff with the correct 3rd member and swapped in my alloy diffs ring and pinion then got a drivers side cv thats 26 spline(ie use the one that came with the steel diff.) my drivers side axle would slot in and work fine?

Cheers

Yes. Two other things:

Blank off the hole for the air-actuated 4WD and perhaps fit a nylon CV shaft bearer (we got ours fron Bits4Vits).

Some more reading here, but the thread does get sidetracked in the middle about the CV shaft bearing - since sorted by the nylon bearer.

Thanks for you help. Just spent way to much on a steel diff but it will be a worthwile investment. Would hate for the alloy one to die in the middle of the bush.
