Filthy Safari
Re: Filthy Safari
how much have you extended them?
Re: Filthy Safari
Did you make sure the angle of the bushes is correct now that you have extended them? The photo makes it look like they are square and that will make them chew the bushes quick.
Also I think you need to add a couple of extra bars to your main hoop. The way you've got it means there is only 1 triangle and so really not very strong. I did one very similar to yours when I extended my first Safari and what I did was have a vertical bar from the chassis mount up to the where the cross brace meets the bend at the top of the hoop. Less then 3m of tube so less than 10kgs of steel to make a massive increase in strength.
The other option is to put a horizontal bar that ties the bend in the uprights together.

I have put the lower arms up top and made new lower arms which ended up being about 950mm long. Off the top of my head i think it was about 280-300mm longer.

The bushes should be alright, no panhard attached in pics and chassis isnt quite in the right spot.
I may add more bars in if I need to build off them but I would have thought that it would be ok? I dont really have a great idea of what works for cages, the main hoop and my tray were bent up by Jono at JRC, I just glued them together

Its an interesting concept though I will have a chat to him about it and do some more research about main hoops on exos...

Think darinz is referring to this photo with the bush comment. The lower arm bushes should be set up on an angle. i.e. centreline of the bush should not be at right angles to the arm. Measure the centreline of the chassis mounts and the centreline of the diff mounts. Diff mounts will be wider.
Also think you should put a horizontal cross brace corner to corner to triangulate the main hoop better. Use full for mounting off to, I use the horizontal brace to mount the tank off on mine.

She's looking good, you'll have less panels to 'reshape' now
What size do your 36" swampers measure up to be and what are they like offroad? Cheers.

Re: Filthy Safari
when you say your chassis isn't in the right spot I take it you mean your diff isn't in the right spot if this is so how did you get the correct measurements and angles for the lower arms?imo you need to need to locate your diff to exactly where it needs to be(centred, pinion angle sorted)and then go from there.hope it all goes well and works out but I still think a arm rear end would be way better
,just my opinion though, good luck i'll catch up soon

Re: Filthy Safari
Its slowly getting closer to being semi completed...
MWB Conversion is all finished, made up a bracket to hold the fuel tank and hooked it all up.
Made the back stays up and welded them in.
Have taken it for a test drive
Felt like I was driving an empty garden trailer

Filthy4x4 wrote:Yeah I have always though it is a bit small but that's what I got recommended and have seen a few mates run it... As far as I know its 44mm Rollcage tube which would be 2.5mm wall?
Just curious, what would you recommend as a replacement?
Sorry mate, missed this post.
Yeah like trundle said, I have used steam pipe. It's seamless, about 3.6mm wall thickness and 42.2mm OD. Bends much nicer/easier (because of the heavier wall) and most of the cheap benders come with a former for that size. I'm sure the MANZ tube is great but figure for the regular banging and rubbing on trees a bit of dent resistance (ie heavy wall) is a good thing. Regarding weight, I used the smaller MANZ tube for cross braces but steam pipe for the main hoops and anything that might regularly meet trees.
In any case I'm a bit late now and what you have done so far looks good.
One thing I will mention while you are planning the layout of the back end. An unintended (for us) consequence of moving the rear axle back is that it actually puts more weight on the front axle, and less on the rear. As such on my mates one we put as much heavy stuff as far back as possible. His batteries are up against the rear most cross member. Any ways, looking awesome. Bit of work to do before Manukau though!
