Good luck finding a Dana 44 here.
There a 3 or 4 build threads on here for D21 SAS.
I am in the process of getting parts together to SAS mine but I will be running the front drive shaft on the right and using a 60 series cruiser axle.

Re: WTD Dana 44 Front axle for Terrano sas
From memory he used a dana 30 out of a Jeep. The problem with Jeep dana's are the stud pattern, and there are no ratios available that match any of the Nissan ratios perfectly.

Re: WTD Dana 44 Front axle for Terrano sas
He uses a adaptor thats bolts to jeep pattern changing to nissan and also spaces diff to same as nissan width, there is jeep ratios that suit nissan, i had 4.88 in my terrano and could get 4.88 out of states for the jeep diff
Re: WTD Dana 44 Front axle for Terrano sas
If you are looking out of a Jeep, Dana 44 front is only available on a 2007+ Wrangler Rubicon. It would be rare, very rare.
A front Dana 30 would be more common, out of a Wrangler 1997-2006, Cherokee XJ, Grand Cherokee ZJ for the same width. Grand Cherokee WG would be wider, so would Wrangler 2007+ (non-Rubicon).

But he used a 1984 Jeep Wagoneer front Dana 44, good luck finding that in NZ. Might be easier to import one from the US...

Re: WTD Dana 44 Front axle for Terrano sas
Your probably better to get a safari transfer case adapted to your gearbox and then use a cruiser axle or similar
Much easier to get parts for in nz and generally a fair bit stronger too

Re: WTD Dana 44 Front axle for Terrano sas
ok so what would be the cheaper and easier option from getting a dana 30 or a new transfer and cruiser axles, also read that mk/mq partol axles would fit if rocking a patrol transfer? anyways anyone got any of these parts? need em soon lol

Are you sure? Didn't all Rubicon spec TJ's have 44's at both ends?

Yes they did, but TJ Rubicons were never exported outside of North America or produced in RHD configuration. Therefore, they are impossible to think about in this context.

Re: WTD Dana 44 Front axle for Terrano sas
Out of interest, how wide is Terrano?
Stock TJ/XJ/ZJ would be 60.5" and JK would be 65.5"
Also, TJ/XJ/ZJ are 5x4.5" stud pattern. JK is 5x5" stud pattern. What are you going to do with the wheels with different stud patterns front and back? How many spare tyres to carry? Could wheel adapters be done up? I don't know, but I am sure it could be done.

Re: WTD Dana 44 Front axle for Terrano sas
Passengerpete has also done a great job on an H233B SAS.
Stock Nissan is 62" wide if i recall correctly.
Nissannut website has step by step tutorials on how to 3 link or 5 link with basic crossover on one of these vehicles so you can be a RTI king. But nothing really on controlling dive/squat.
The only D44 variant that would work is from some 1980s US domestic vehicles and therefore not available here.
Any how its a balljoint/UJ axle unlike the Japanese ones...
No offence but if the OP's friend didn't know that he's not ready to SAS it. Well he could but it would just end up like dirtydog's old one - much worse off.

Re: WTD Dana 44 Front axle for Terrano sas
I have been researching mine for a long time and decided to use a 60 series Cruiser front axle as they are strong, easy to get bits for and only 10mm narrower than the d21 rear diff. I plan on using a safari auto with a td27 front on it to get the drive shaft down the drivers side. I want as much as possible to be off the shelf parts of easy to find second hand.
Another option is to flip a toyota axle which is not that expensive to do.
I also looked into importing a dana 44 but it is just to expensive and it is really hard to get someone in america to pull an axle and ship it this far.

Re: WTD Dana 44 Front axle for Terrano sas
Sounds like it will be a beast.
For a future project on another WD21 (V6 auto), my recipe is Nissan C200s front and rear, standard TX10 transfer, swap the axle tubes around on the front, 4 pin lsd front, GQ CV swap, factory crossover, probably wristed radius arm.
But 3.7:1 transfer gears for the current truck first

Re: WTD Dana 44 Front axle for Terrano sas
40 and hilux are too narrow.
There is a manual box on trade me to suit a terrano with the front drive shaft on the right side he wants $1600 for it.
http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-par ... 271073.htm
Howat Engineering in Wellington can flip the diff and I was given a very reasonable price.

cruiser diffs are pretty big ie will hang down pretty low you'd need some bigger tyres on it to regain some clearance then that brings gearing issues into play

Terrano rear diff is 9.25" compared to the 9" cruiser diff so won't really make a difference

might need the big tyres after all then

Only in theory tho.
Unless of course you are wanting wheels poking way out past guards then I guess they be too narrow

Re: WTD Dana 44 Front axle for Terrano sas
From the research I have done these are the axle width choices
D21 rear is 1495mm
60 series front is 1485mm
40 series front is 1400mm
Hilux front is 1400mm
80 series front is 1600mm
GQ safari is also about 1600 put I didnt bother looking at these as they are too wide.
Imho 100mm narrower on the front would make life difficult with the lack of room in the D21 front guards unless you lift it sky high or just drive in a straight line.
Wheel spacers could be used to increase the width but this moves the wheel away from the king pin and increase's it arc when turning so you would need even more clearance in the guard.

Chev 4x4 pickups and blazers also have d44 but the drive shaft is on the right hand side

Indeed. You're on the ball there. If front axle is moved forward slightly it allows for the swing back effect of wide offset rims. The front lip of front guard can easily be trimmed.

Easily enough innerguard clearance without skyhigh lift, and hilux swivel hubs limit amount of steering lock.
But I do think you're right, an axle closer to the width of rear axle would be more ideal.
