Hi all.
My name is Sam, im a mechanic from Dunedin. I recently picked up a very tidy 94 isuzu Bighorn SWB off a workmate for next to nix. It has a couple of minor modifications, a 3" exhaust from the turbo back, Manual Locking Hubs, Running boards/rockslider hybrid sort of things, slightly bigger 265/70r16 AT tyres and a K&N oiled type airfilter.
The plan is to use it to get out and explore a bit more of the local area with my missus, i may also use it to get to a few hunting spots here and there. I have had it out for a bit of a play on a public access river flat that had a few formed tracks up past oamaru recently and had a ton of fun, but i mainly plan to use it on exisiting 4wd trails at the more "mild" end of life compared to most of you i suppose.
Im currently looking into snorkel options for a bit of cheap insurance on river crossings, may also look into making my own for a bit of a project.
Im also looking for some form of cheap self recovery option. A couple of things i have found are the following:
The ridge ryder branded hand puller from supercheap and some sort of chain or winch extension strap: http://www.supercheapauto.co.nz/online- ... 3555#Cross
And this high lift jack style kit: http://www.4wdbits.co.nz/ProductDetails ... uctID=4231
Has anyone had any experience with these? I dont want to blow a lot of money, chances of getting stuck are low, and if we do i dont mind having to put in manual effort to get out. The sort of things i am planning to do in it are macetown, the nevis, skippers canyon etc (you may be able to tell i grew up in the central otago/southern lakes district!) just to show the girl some of the cool places we have around down here (originally an auckland lass!)
Cheers all
Sam

Welcome to ore
I have one of the high lift winch kits and they work well just don't expect to get out fast they are slow as hell
I wouldn't want to go near one of the ridge Ryder winch things they just seem a bit light weight and can be a pain in the ass to release the tension

A hi lift and a chain winch kit will serve you way better than one of those shitty supercheap hand puller things.

Thanks for the advice, i appreciate it.
Does anybody know of some nice cruisy trips in the coastal otago region? Preferably where camping is allowed. I know of various trips in central otago but am not so familiar with the costal region unfortunatly.
