Warn 8274 mount angle

Post by kbushnz »

Hi All
Quick question....
Has anyone mounted a Warn 8274 with a lean on it, either forward or back.
Had any issues with it?
Apart from making sure the oil stays inside what else could there be?
Was thinking of tilting my rear mount forward on a 40 to 45 deg angle. To snugly fit under the spare tyre mount.

I'd be interested too, thinking along the same lines.

See what the installation and operation guide says...

Only thing I can think of is that you will place the mount bolts into a shear load set up... Potentially...

Thanks for that... My thoughts to re shear ...

Here is what the opening lines of the manual say.

MOUNTING WINCH
Choose a mounting location that is
sufficiently strong enough to withstand
the loads you intend to winch. Only
the mounting orientation shown are
possible for safe winching operation. All
others are improper and inappropriate.

Oh well buggar it, winch is now mounted on a forward lean.
Few more bits to weld in to stop it twisting. Leans forward to allow spare tyre to be on an angle later in build. Battery will mount right in front of elec motor. Also set so rope won't foul with diff when suspension squats. Can also grab rope off back of drum to pull backwards.

maybe max weight pull load of 5 tons things may straighten out a bit on your mount frame,
May best surmise , :D

The Angle iron is 5 or 6mm thick.... used it on my PTO setup and its worked fine...
Agree with the shear issue... The end plate is not the original alloy one... Its solid steel.... and the bolts are bigger than original. I dont think it will fail anytime soon.
The shear strength of the bolts combined exceed 10 ton...
The alloy gear box end concerns me but to be honest the Warn 9000i which is mounted in full shear use the same size bolts and captive nuts and the alloy casting is similar.
I have also utilised a threaded stub on the gear box housing and mounted that against the frame also...
This wont be my main winch... For those heavy dead winch type loads will be done by the PTO....
The electric is the backup / technical winch one.....

So everything sounds good on paper..

What I will say as an owner of a Toyota HiMount (Japanese 8274) they are both bloody big winches!

I dont think youll have any problem with the mount or the winch itself, but what about another tube from the crossmember at the front, to the chassis rail on both sides, assuming nothing is in the way....

I think my mount will be fine... Plenty of steel in it now.
The photo above doesn't show the angles I have added to the rear cross member...
Its more the winch itself... Particularly the alloy casting....
Will throw a better photo up later...

Completed winch mount from a few angles...
Also that extra mount point of the side of the alloy case.
The newer 8274's don't have this casting...
Not sure if it was for an earth point but I will use it... 8)
