clutch noise

Post by Petemcc »

My toyota 4runner recently started making a noise that sounds like a belt slipping. To start with I thought that that was what it was but then I realised that it only happend when the clutch was out. On further inspection I realised that the boot on the cluch fork had come out and that the noise seemed to be coming from in there some where...
any thoughts

Cheers Pete

Sounds like the clutch release bearing is still in contact with the clutch centre.

With the boot missing, shit gets in, and after a while, builds up on the mechanism inside, preventing the release bearing from fully disengaging.
Also the r/b may be getting tired and not turning a s freely as it should. Works ok when clutch drpressed, cos its under good load. BUT!! when its DIS engaged, it is in light contact with the clutch centre, squeals like a stuck pig.
Out comes the gearbox!!!!

ic. is this the bearing that comes with a cluch kit or a different one? i have been planing on doing the cluch for a while now its done 275,000ks and is geting abit tired.
sounds like now is the time. any suggestions on driving it till i get it done (would be two weeks away). when i thought it was a belt i drove round for a week and then back to invers from qtwn (2 hours) doesnt seem to have got any worse and there is no rumbling.

cheers Pete

Yeah, should be, been a long time since I had had to buy a clutch etc.
as far as driving it, should be good to go for months yet. It will only make a noise for some time and then shit itself and shag the clutch pressure plate fingers. Two weeks will be good if that's yer time frame.

Don't forget to do the pilot bearing while you are in there.....they can make a squealing sound too.
