4WD SouthIsland books

Post by Philbo »

I am interested in purchasing a 4wd trip book that covers all the requirements and detailed maps. I came across this book on Trademe
'4WD South Island 77 Off road Adventures'.

Is this a good book or are there better ones out there to purchase?

Talk soon.

The South Island 4WD books were done by Ken Sibly and Mark Wilson.
77 Off Road Adventures was first published in 1996.
It was followed up in 1999 with a second book 93 New Off Road Adventures.
In 2000 the original book was revised expanded and re-published as 107 Off Road Adventures.

All versions of the books are now 14-18 years old and track information will have changed and may be some what dated but they are a useful starting point.

There is a later book published by Spot X publishing. They do various books on fishing tramping etc. and did one called Spot-X Off-Roading New Zealand.
Think that was around 2010 and Bill Hohepa did most of the South Island input.

Mark Wilson also did a book "4WD SOUTH" Exploring South Canterbury Otago and Southland.
A Shoal Bay Book published in 2006

Ken Sibley also did another great book called "The New Zealand Four-Wheel Drive Handbook" in 2004. This book is full of great advice on the basics of off roading vehicle basics etc.
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

Not a track by track guide book, but an awesome read nonetheless.

Thanks for all the info.

Have decided on the Spot X Offroading NZ.
This is the most up-to-date and also covers trips that we may do (wife allowing) on holidays.
