Surf overdrive problems

Postby _LowKey_ » Fri Sep 19, 2014 4:58 pm

Hi guys, recently had the speedo cluster out of my surf to do temp gauge mod (done by auto sparky not d.i.y)
After the speedo was re installed its like the vehicle now has no over drive or its in full time low box, takes ages to change into 2nd gear and no top over drive after 80kmh like before, any help is appreciated asap as its my daily runner.

thanks

Don't know how a surf is wired but my pajero 'lost' overdrive when the speedo stopped working.
You might want to check all wires are connected, or it could be a coincidence that it happened at the same time.

speedo is working fine, everything else seems to be fine no dash lights of concern etc. been reading about the capacitors on the ecu, might have to rip that open tomorrow might be a bit of a coincidence. hoping its not the trans...

The speed signal comes out of the instrument cluster and can be disconnected and still have the speedo going. Pull the cluster and check that all 4 screws holding the speedo into the cluster are tight and clean.
Checking the ECU is also a very good idea as well.

I had no overdrive, and no second. I had the ECU repaired, it didn't fix it, however it ran better, so money well spent. In the end it was the solenoids in the gearbox that were buggered. $120 for the solenoids from the US of A, and a couple of hours and its all good. If your in Auckland and have a KZN130 you're welcome to try my freshly rebuilt ECU first. The ecu repair was $172.50

Ok, so far have tried another dash cluster without any mods done to it, still the same problem, pulled out ecu and took off covers, noticed one of the capacitors had a bit of corrosion around one of the pins, but no other sign of wear no burnt tracks or black marks any where, but all the googling i have done leans towards ecu being at fault, so will try another one tomorrow hopefully and see how it goes. hopefully solve it!

check the capacitors for expansion ie the top pops up a little otherwise I,ll get another ecu on Monday for brett to bring over. Overdrive may be electrically engaged .not sure if there may be a fuse that may have popped .hopefully one of the surf gurus on here may be able to help

Have checked all capacitors for leaking/expansion, 1 was leaking so that has been replaced today, along with the other smaller one on top board as apparently thats the auto side of the ecu according to uncle google. Still experiencing same problem, will do some more googling and see if theres any other answers out there. And cheers Sig, appreciate it!

pull the plastic surround of around the shifter and give the OD switch wires a test with a voltmeter. If no body is home give it it's own feed.

It would also pay to pull the codes from the diagnostic port. That's how I figured out it was the shift solenoids in my truck.

My money is on the ecu, I have repaired them before and you think you have seen all the problems but miss things. I've had them a part three times before I have got them. Have a good look around the circult board around where you have replaced things.

As above. Have you got access to another ecu to test it?

Yes and no.

Mine wasn't shifting right, and had no overdrive, I had the ECU repaired, but it didn't fix that issue, however it did make it easier to start, and better on gas, as well as a little more grunt. In the end I had a shift solenoid that was faulty, so I purchased a set from ebay ($120) and fitted them with a new trans filter, and now its like new. The shift solenoids fail fairly regular, however they usually come up with a fault code when you bridge out the connectors.

Right we have the answer, swapped out my ecu with one from wreckers, first drive down the road and all back to normal, bloody rapt!
Will get all capacitors replaced in my one and keep it for a spare.

Thanks guys for all your help especially sig, appreciate it!
