AC Pump to Air Compressor KZN130 Surf

Post by Sheepy »

Hey Everyone.

So ive got the plumbing side of the AC pump to Aic Compressor conversion sorted. I have an air filter to an air tool oiler to the intake side of the pump, and I flared the pressure side and have a hose and fitting on there, and that's fine. how ever, I can not figure the wiring of the pump out. I turned on the car, and turned on the fan, and hit the switch, expecting it to work, and no dice. The AC was working before I had it degassed and striped it. I'd like to add a switch to the engine bay, but i'm obviously missing something? Do I need to put 12v to something, or what? Any advice?

I think there is a pressure switch around the condensor maybe the right hand side, you will have to bridge it out.You can always put power straight into the clutch wire and it will go but that would require a seperate switch.

Im cool with an extra switc h, as I would prefer to control it from the engine bay. So the big single wire on the top of the pump just add a fuse and a DC switch to it and ill be golden?

Yep run a switch to the clutch relay . Plumb the pumps intake line into the crank case ventilation line between the air intake and oil catch can(if ya have one etc).
Grab a old fire extingisher or tank and same fittings along with a pressure relief valve set for 90 psi and bobs your uncle..... the air will smell like ac refridgerant for the first few times you use it and try not to inflate more then four tyres at atime or you will cook the pump.

I used a 9 kg dry powder extingisher for my tank does for m/t,s back up to 38 psi from 8-10psi in about 2 minutes
Waiter...there is a drought in my glass.

Take the 2 wires from the ac pressure switch and connect them to a pressure switch on your tank. Air tool oil is far too light and the oilers don't work that well either. Put a tee piece in the inlet pipe with a dust cap so you can add oil on a regular basis. I use engine oil. Fit a pressure relief valve as the ac pump is capable of 400Psi. Be wary of running it for long periods as the pump used to be cooled by the refrigerant and of course now its not and they get hot quite quickly. If you smell hot oil through the air line its time to give it a rest. Will run lockers all day though and should be ok to inflate 4 tyres in one hit. Its when you let your mates do their tyres too that you start overdoing it. Easiest way to get all the bits is to buy a cheap small compressor and junk the motor. You get rated tank, gauge, safety valve, pressure switch, and outlets all ready to go for not much Wonga.

Cheers for the tip. The only thing I can see is the ac only has one wire which is a positive. I have it hooked to a switch and it works fine right now. I will do your trick with the oiler, however I have removed the stock valve (i assume refrigerant fill port?) on the intake side and left the cap in there and add oil that way, i'm not running a tank as yet, but junking an old compressor works. Does the pressure switch on an old compressor care that your feeding it DC power?

I actually hooked into the fill port for the oil. Compressor pressure switch is fine with DC and its only a low current. One problem I had was the airline blowing off at the pump end. The heat softened the standard air line I used. Cut the standard ac hose and use copper pipe for as much of the run as you can to allow the compressed air to cool. Cheers Andy.
