80 Series Front Diff Question
80 Series Front Diff Question
I was underneath greasing my drive shafts and noticed the front diff pinion seal leaking a weee bit. Jacked it up and removed the wheels. Gave the hubs a wee turn by hand and watched the drive shaft flange move about 5mm back and forth when turning the hubs forward just a tad, then backwards a tad. Im just wondering if this is normal amount of movement or not??? The pictures are taken showing the amount it moves.

There should be no movement in the pinion what so ever, needs to be tight or really bad things happen as is any up or down movement.
After reading your description again, when turning back and forward there is some slack in the gears from going forward to backwards, there is prob 5 mm or so in my truck but cant say whats normal i know there should be some at least.
If your talking about the dust seal how ever they can get bent by rocks etc and make things look out of shape/alignment (the black painted bit with chips of paint off it)

When I was taking the pinion nut/seal etc off, I did notice a fair bit of up and down movement.

Once you release the pressure off the nut then yes you will have heaps on up and down movement, but when its tight there shouldn't be any as this would mean the pinion is floating.

Comes back to the crush sleeve thing.
Some people reuse crush sleeves. Personally I never ever would.

For maximum reliability/durability - Now that the pinion nut has been backed off its time to pull the whole member.

x2 on the crush sleeve's they are shit the only way to go is a solid spacer and shims, don't try and set it up yourself unless your pretty diff savy otherwise bad things usually end up happening
give it to someone that knows what they are doing and they can check out the condition of the pinion and bearings for you and get it all set up properly

Thanks for the feedback. Been talking to Nathan from Kaiapoi Repowers, as he has an open diff head, which I might install while my one is off getting rebuild. As my truck is my daily driver and I'm using my recently deceased Dad's Terrano to get to work and its kinda not the most ideal situation. I'll try to remove my diff head this weekend and see what it has done.

Well Ive got it all out and totally stripped, well the diff housing is. Going to work out cost to have the diff rebuild and getting the housing knuckles repaired, as they are were worn. Looks like they are the cause or the start of the problems and if I dont fix them or get a second hand one. This will keep on happening.
