Hi lift jack mounting

Post by stu_71 »

Hi all,

Sorry if this has been discussed before. I did search but couldn't find anything. I'm looking for options to mount the typical hi-lift jack on to my roof bars. I currently have mine mounted on the rear door but want to get rid of the weight. I have square tubular roof bars (3 of) on the roof.

I've done some googling but are there any fancy/easy mounts that are of decent quality that you would recommend please?

Yeah, I looked at those thanks, but they look as if they are attached to the vehicle by drilling 4 holes and attaching those brackets to it. Like a bonnet mount perhaps?

I need something I can attach to a rectangular tube roof bar. Or am I missing something?

those 4x4bits ones work but the wingnuts will always come loose, you can drill a hole through the studs and use a R Clip to stop the wing nuts coming off but they still keep coming loose and the jack will rattle, you can swap the wing nuts over for nyloc nuts and they'll stay tight, If you don't want to buy one of those 4x4bits ones you can make your own brackets to attach to the roof bars and use some 12mm bolts and nylocs to secure the jack :D

yeah, drill the holes down through your square rails, one on each roof rack rail with the bracket pointing upwards and away you go, Or attach both to one rail and have your jack going across on roof rack, pain in the Ass trying to get it on and off that way though.
I will be using these soon to bolt my hi lift to the side of my roof cage. I might make a flat plate to put on the inside of the cage as the tin it is made of isn't very thick.

Depending on dimensions you could use square bend u bolts to fix that 4wdbit mount to your existing bar work.

Yeah mine too, I was worried about the cage mesh being able to take the weight of the jack, so started thinking about mounting to the roof rack direct.
Could work tho - thanks for the suggestion.

I had mine on the roof bars on my safari just using m12 bolts thru the bars with an extra nut and washer to hold the jack on. Never came loose. But took it off in the end, only issue was it would hook on branches/vines etc hanging down and try to rip the racks off haha. Havnt thought to much about how I'm going to mount it on the book yet

I would get longish bolts with nylocs (get nylocs same size as vehicle wheel nuts - means 1 socket to remove this and your wheel nuts - which is prob the main reason to want to use it) and bolt thru your roof bar, you will need spacers, as the mechanism is about 50mm proud on 1 side versus the bar of hilift.
That way when you bolt it is sits parallel to bar
1 guy in club has mounted his so its trailing the rear roof bar - not sitting proud.
I would use 3 bolts for safety, it a decent piece of metal that you don't want to let go inside or outside of vehicle

Love it! thx for all the suggestions.

I'm err-ing towards strong L-shape angle bolted to the roof bar then more bolts going through the hi-lift onto the L-shapes.
