BJ40 1975 with 3B engine (engine rebuild required)

Sadly this beautful BJ40 may have to hit the hay..

A bearing broke and the crank soon followed whilst on the motorway heading for a long overdue offroad trip south to the Hawkes Bay.. The second trip since owning it.

It was found in a shed a few years back in the Waikato, I brought it to Auckland where I had a fair amount of work done.
It's an awesome car, it would be a shame to break into parts for sale as everything but the engine is good.

I have been quoted 6K full engine rebuild for the 3B 3.4 litre diesel engine...
i'm not sure I can put this kind of money into this luxury that i'm quite attached to!

Can anyone advise what to do with it?! Anyone have a spare 3B engine?!

I may bite the bullet or put into storage for another year, as the missus would like us to save for a house (same old story).

Hi, Can you replace or refurbish the crank and bearings and leave the rest untouched?

a second hand engines the most economic option mate its a bit of a gamble buying one but those little tractor engines go for ever (except your one ) theres tons of 3B's sitting in old 70 series cruisers rusting away getting wrecked keep your eyes open and some cheap motors will come up will only take you a weekend and a couple of boxes of beer to swap them over

If your expecting to keep the cruiser for another 30 years and clock up another 400 0000 km's go for a recond or if its just a little weekend play toy that does 10-15km per year a second hand motor will be sweet

How about repowering it with a 13B,14B,15B + Turbo if required? ex Toyota dyna usually, Simple conversion and gets you away from the 3B dog indirect injection (the 1 in front is direct injection)

Yes one handed driving isn't wise or sometimes possible especially whilst turning.. An hours drive in an FJ is better than an hour at the gym!

Cheers for the advice. I keep hearing that they are 'bullet proof'.. Maybe next time!

I have decided to get the truck dropped back home from the re-conditioners and i'll look out for a second hand one, I have seen a couple on trade me in the South Island.
I've managed to source a hoist, and i've got a couple of handy friends that would be keen to help. (by handy I mean able to drink beer and point). I've never undertaken an engine swap but i've heard it's more labour intensive than technical if it's a straight swap?

I considered this, would be nice to have the extra power.. though I half bought this truck to slow me down
Plus my brakes are stone age, stopping is like a train pulling into a station. In a few years if I keep hold of it i'd consider the swap, brakes and suspension upgrade, maybe even power steering!

Hi, I think the crank was too far gone. But I could replace the bottom I guess. There's a replacement engine down south on trade me where only the head is the problem.

the one in wanaka sounds like you. put your head on it. cheap fix. horrible engines to change tho!
