Talk to Hosehustler his Old Man used to run an LSD in the front of his dualcab hilux, eventually changed to an airlocker as he didn't lke the feel of a front LSD I think.

have an LSD in the front of my missile, doesnt have the agressive traction that the locker had but doesnt blow CV's all the time either which is much better when your in the bush with limited spares.

as for driving feel, i cant tell the difference between the LSD and an open diff when cruising tracks, has a bit more traction then an open diff but doesnt make the steering any harder or turning radius wider which the locker did.
If you already know everything, DON'T ask bloody questions!!

your rear diff is a low pinion if the front diff head looks like it is upside down compared to the rear diff it is a high pinion if it looks the same as the rear diff a rear one should fit

Yeah it will swap from the back to the front - I've done it on my Lux. You wont notice hardly any difference in driving, but will get a bit more traction at times when needed. There is plenty of guys in 4runners and Lux's running LSDs front and rear and they go well.

Before putting it in the front make sure it's still nice and tight and working well- otherwise you may be putting in alot of effort for little result. Hilux rear LSDs have a pretty good reputation for being shagged after 50 or 60,000km road work :?

When it comes to checking out wear and specs of an LSD there is a couple of older threads here with all the info on the topic

Al is right Dad put an LSD in the front of his 93 beam axle d/c lux.....was better than standard by far but was removed in favour of a locker which is the better option by far and not too disimilar in price if you go for the lockrite type which is the cheapest option (about 500.00) if you import onr yourself on do what Dad did and put ARB in 1200.00 minimum
overall I suggest you spend your money on a lockright but can sell you an LSD if you wanna watse your time

http://www.rocky-road.com under powertrax just select what diff you require and allow 2-3 weeks. Cheapest option for us in NZ for auto lockers.

The best option is an air locker. The others are ok for bush tracks etc but if you do any farm driving along the sides of hills they can be dangerous as you will find the front sliding diwn hill

i have found that the auto lokka's actually unlock quite easily (wet grass if you go slow you wont rip up the inside wheel) and if you have manual hubs if its really slippery and your worried then make it a 3wd

undoubtably an air locker is the best option. We would all have air lockers Front and Rear if we had the coin. :(

The query was about a LSD in the front. When I saw Ben - wopass with his locka in the front it put me off doing the same (I see where exactly he is coming from in his post) so I'll stick with my LSD. I've never had any handling problems on and around hills, although it is trailered and even though it also has a welded rear 8) . When out with Wopass when he had his auto locka's at both ends I seemed to steer mine around corners better and wasn't really at to much disadvantage otherwise either.

As for LSD's slipping the front around going down or up hills. I've spent 2000hrs sliding around the big King Country hills cropping with tractors with LSD fronts over the last few years and have never had an issue what so ever(same as in my truck). More traction the better. Certainly when you lock the rear tractor diff on a slippery sidling it may slide sideways abit, normally in those cases you would just use a bit of the top side independent (same as a comp truck)

Prior to transplant of dual ARB's, in an earlier life my Surf was equipped with front and rear LSD's. The LSD's were 'tightened', and while not offering difflock-like traction, performed extremely well. Thus shod, I tackled some pretty extreme terrain, and never experienced any adverse handling characteristics.

In my personal opinion, borne of personal experience, I would not hesitate to recommend an LSD in the frontImage.

How tight did you pack the LSDs?

I've heard recommenations of 110lbs but that was for a road vehicle and I`m wanting to know for my FJ40 offroader.
