Beter on fuel than the supra, little less power but good low torque, I think they r a good compromise on power but not too much, for once I will agree on what lax said, that some power is good but too much can cause problems.

The g52 is fine for the 3rz, there's guys on here who have run 3.8 comy motors with the g52 and never had a problem.

You see the 3rz motors pop up occasionally as guys pull them out to install v8s into their 2wd Ute's, I've seen them for $800 with all the add on bits, alt, starter etc, even the bell housing and clutch

Are you dead set on manual?

If not a commy v6 conversion could be cheapish, depending on how much you do yourself. But it will be hard on fuel. (probably as good or better than the Toyota V6 though from what I have read)

Buy a motor, auto box and loom for $1000. Bolt an isuzu bighorn transfercase to it. Sort wiring (dead simple), cooling, exhaust, engine mounts, tcase mount and driveshafts. Cert it. Done.

I'm making it sound simple. It may not be quite that easy but you get the idea. I'd say you could do it for $3000 if you do all the work yourself. $500 for cert. Then all your money every week for fuel. Sweet as.

Very careful planning and research would be required to keep it to budget. Even this "cheap" conversion could easily go to $5000 if you are not careful.

Mate that's a fairly low ball estimate on that conversion hahaha but its worth it

Don't do it cos of the dollars and cents do it because you love it.

3rz's are real cheap, Craig (surf10) on here couldn't sell his one, ended up getting $100 for it complete with new rear sump, loom etc

Ive had all the engines mentioned in this thread, so I'll chuck my 2c in as well.
3.0V6 Surf petrol... absolute dog, gutless, drinks petrol...
3.0 Supra, Ive got a 7mge, rather than a 2jz, in my daily driver surf, it had a g52 behind it for about 10 years before that lost some teeth on the input, but that happens with 3Y in front as well with a 30 y.o. gearbox lol..
supra ,motor transformed the surf, uses less gas that either the v6 or the 3y, get about 450k per tank. Plenty of power, 200hp from memory, tows fine, great cheap conversion. Ive now transferred it to a Ln130 surf, all up cost was about $2500 from memory
build thread here

Lexus is not a cheap exercise... 5-7k as has been mentioned.
3rz is a great conversion, good power, torque, not as grunty as the supra, but you cant go wrong with it, modern motors have no dizzy, easy wiring, try and get a base model NZ new hilux one, no "frilly" bits :)
g52 is fine behind a 3rz, stock clutch works.
'85 Hilux crawler, 3rz, duals, 4.7's, 4.88's, ARB's, 30 spline Longfields, 6 stud SNR4x4 Histeer, Airshocks up front, coiled rear, 40" Iroks.

Well the thing about money is its tight atm, working in tourism if theres no tours theres no cash haha :D but getting into cruise ship season ill end up working way longer hours and get some doe rolling in haha so thinking ill keep an eye out for a 3rz or 2jz and grab one when they pop up, could be an xmas present to myself lol :P

So think ive decided it haha :D save some cash while keeping an eye out for a 3rz or 2jz to throw in the 85 surf. Buy my mates 3l v6 surf off him for next to nothing and bring that back to road legal stage and sas that (simply because then i learn even more :D) haha gotta start somewhere :P and then once new engine in older surf, swap some other bits over and shes sorted :D

Keep an eye on the car enthusiast forums, I picked up my first 2JZ for $500 (motor, Box, Full Loom & ECU), Went to see it running Saturday morning, then collected Saturday Afternoon

Second one cost me $200 but didnt get to see it running.
