Pajero Tyres

My Pajero is standard, I have just purchases a set of nissan steel rims with 31/10.5/15 M/T, I have 31/10.5.15 A/T tyres on my alloy rims, when the A/T are worn out I will go for road tyres on the alloys.

My "play" tyres will be on the steel rims, the M/T tyres have 13mm of tread on them so will be play tyres for some time.

Does anyone know what are the biggest M/T tyres I can go to before I need to lift my Pajero? I do know if I go bigger then 32's I will need low volume certification (1.05% of the rolling circumfrance of the standard tyres)

Tire fitment depends on which model you have.

Gen 1 (up to 89 or so, old box shape) 32 is about it without a lift. Thers not a whole lot of room, but a bit of subtle trimming should see you right.

Gen 2 you can normally go to 33's if you pay attention to offsets etc.

I have 33 x 12.5's on the factory exceed (Gen 2)alloy rims, the off set is perfect, the tyres fit exactly to the edge of the flares, and clear the stearing box at full lock.

I also have 32 x 11.5's on a set of nissan rims, they just stick past the guards by about 1/2 an inch.

With the front 33's at full suspension compression they just touch the flares, but I have trimmed my bump stops, so standard you should still have an inch or so of clearence.

The 33's tuck inside the rear guards, still a couple of inches clearence.

The 33's at the front are just touching.

Also worthy to note - not many 33's are 33 inches and many struggle to be 32 inches.......

the 3.5ltr petrols and 2.8ltr diesels had a body lift over the 3.0 petrol and 2.5 diesels from the factory. i think doddzee managed to get 35" mudzillers on his 3.5ltr with very little or no trouble. i hve 33" sumitomos on landcrusier steel rims on my 3.0 jtop. trimed the bumper slightly and massaged the rear of the wheelarch. but you would never know if you wernt looking. check the size of the steel rims you have also, factory safari rims are 15x7 so i wouldnt go much bigger than 31s on them. maybe 32s but i wouldnt put 33s on. hope that helps.

Mine is a Gen II 2.8 swb diesel.

Thanks for the advise, I will probaqbly go to 32s when I wear out the 31s, which will be in some time.

My ATs are Hankook, the MT are Kumho, I have noticed both are 31's I have noticed the ATs sit about an inch higher then the MT, though the MT have more tread depth, must be the different makes.

Just recently wrote off my 92 Jtop which ran 33x12.5 have just put those tyres on my 90 (Gen1) LWB and I dont have a lift. Will have to check out the artic in the next week or so when I get the head bark on it?????

Sorry to hear that, everyone OK ?

Will be interesting to see how you get on with the 33's, I found there was not enough room in the wheel wells, you may need to get out the grinder

The Gen 2 Pajero alloys are 15 x 7, according to my owners manual, did the 33's fit on these or are the exceed alloys bigger?

Next time ask a question that dosent involve me going outside, jacking the truck up, removing the front wheel and scraping the crud off

It says they are a 15 X 7, yes they are the mags in the photo, and the tyres you see are the 33 by 12.5.

They fit without a problem as they are a radial with very flexy sidewalls. The narowness should held keep the bead seated at the lower pressures.

By comparison my 32 by 11.5 Interco TSL's (super swampers) would have a hard time surviving on a rim that narrow as being a bias ply tyre the side wall is very stiff.

You are very lucky having the 2.8, as others have said previously you have a factory body lift of 30mm (to clear the larger transmission bellhousing), you should have no probs with a set of 33's

Wako - I think my steel rims (with the swampers) are from a nissan safari and they are 8 inches wide, maybe they are off something else, will look into it.

My Nissan steel rims are 15 x 7, its stamped on the outside of the rims, and they are clean and in my garage...

The 31 inch Kumhos on the steel rims are mud tyres with 13mm of tread so will wear them out before going for a set of 33s but will have my alloys with 31s on for wof time, as 33s require low volume certification.

Depending on the tyre brand will depend on what size fits nicely. A 33 inch Maxxis Mudder measures 32.2 inches when new and a BFG 33 measures 32.8.

I run the BFG on factory 7 inch rims in 33 inch but the narrower one - 33 x 10.5 x 15 and it gives me plenty of clearance.

Problems started to arrive when I tried some worn 255/85/16 (measured about 32.8 - 33.3 new) and they rubed alot on Landcruiser rims. Nissan ones are the same as Pajero.

I was quite amazed at how much difference the offset made - I can run chains on my 33's and still not rub with the std offset. (Basically No lift)

Certification... - I have never been queried, possibly becasue they are on factory rims and they don't look out of place, possibly becasue they are not real fat...

And when GPS'ed my speedo was much more accurate with the 33's on. A true 100k was indicating about 98 on the speedo as apposed to 107 prior

on my hankook 31 ats ( which are taller than the kumho mts in spite of the fact that the kumhos have more tread) my GPS says 100 at 100... spot on.

They are menat to have certification if the rolling circumftance is 105% of factory, 32.5 inches.

Will put road tyres on my alloys when those tyres are worn... and keep the nissan rims for play

Cheers... plan on not making it an issue by having my road tyres (the pajero is my only vehicle anmd I do lots of ks up andf down to Auckland) on when going for WOFs... the nissan rims are for playing only
