4wd tracks around christchurch

Post by RobLucking »

Hey guys,

hopefully this is the right place.

Im wanting to do a day trip with a few friends in my safari this week, wanting a track that still needs 4wd but not too hard as to need support vehicles. I have hand winch at the worst but would rather a non-stuck trip.

Ideally something up the port hills or towards akaroa, bit of a view etc. even inland.

Is there much around?

I'm keen to know a few too, heading that way next month and keen to get off road. I was joining others heading to McCauley hut but they all bailed

I've done the Waipara river before, and will prob go there again. That's worth a look if you want to go that way.

Worsleys Rd is the only track on the Port Hills but its pretty hard core these days. Walk or mtb it before you try driving it. Peninsula way try Takamatua stock track but not if its wet (grassy track with nasty consequences if you slip off). And not really 4wd as such but try spending a day or two driving in and out of each bay followed by a meal and a fanta at the Hilltop Pub - thats not a bad way to use a sunny day.

Best place is probably Ashley track .... go down end of Rossiters Rd & turn right at end ... is a well formed but reasonably easy track ... if you keep out of the river you shouldn't get into too much trouble.

Anybody here been up Worsleys Rd recently? Just wondering what condition the track is in? Thinking bout heading up there this afternoon to give my new ride a bit of a work out. If I go will be by myself, what are the chances of other vehicles being up there if I were to get into any strife?
