steering box mod
Hi there
I am in the process of doing the steering box mod but i believe i have the wrong sized hole in the pitman arm for the dummy box as i"m running the larger tie rod ends
My question is, is the hole in the pitman arm tapered the same as the tie rods? if so how can i drill a taper to suit?
Cheers Pete

Youre running the standard 4wd steering setup?

Re: steering box mod
Those tapers should be the same shouldn't they, 2wd and 4WD?
I was (until some time back) using the same steering box and idler arm on the 4WD center-link and then installed the 2WD center-link with no issues with the taper.
Not sure if year of manufacturer makes a difference, but did you get your second steering box from a similar year truck?

Re: steering box mod
His truck must be a post 92 running the slightly larger taper on the standard 4wd system
IIRC the 2wd centerlink 1986-1997 was only ever the earlier smaller taper.
Thus leading to the conclusion that he is running the 4wd linkage.
Gotta buy that pitman arm off kiwipete to convert to 2wd steering system and get an earlier box as the idler to suit.

Re: steering box mod
Hi guys
I have already done the 2wd steering mod and I believe the dummy box is for a pre 92

Re: steering box mod
I may have confused some people it's the hole for the center link that's in the pitman arm and it's 11mm on the top and about 9mm on the bottom. Dose any one know who can machine tapered holes

Re: steering box mod
yeah, you can also do the outer tie rod end holes in the hub casting, there is plenty of meat to do it , i basically turned down a steel tapered dowel the size of the large taper at work, then wrapped it in sand paper.
I was forced to do this to the hubs because no one(part company supplier) could get me the correct tie rod(or had the correct part number) for the facelift mistral so used the earlier rano' ones off the shelf at BNT.
popped the old tie rod out of the hub stuck the dowel in the high speed drill and honed it out till the new tie rod end with the larger spline fitted.

Yep Im confused. Looks like I made a pres out of ume and E again.
The part I dont get is that the joint on the 2wd centerlink are all the 'small' taper. (ie pre 92) (according to supplier fits model years Navara D21 2wd 1986-1997)
So how is it possible that the taper on the new idler box is too small? I thought the only possibility is that the taper would be too large (ie 92+ type)

Re: steering box mod
Poss682, Is it your new steering boxes pitmann arm won't fit onto the 2wd centrelink?
Lax is correct- the 2wd centre link is the smaller taper (~13mm), the 4wd can be smaller or 93- have a larger (~15mm)
If your pitmann taper is too small for the 2wd centrelink- then I wonder what steering box is off? A real early datsun? Is it a powersteer box?

Yes my pitman arm will not fit in to the 2wd centre link. Maybe i have the wrong center link..... ?
I will have to pull it all off this weekend and have a better look and ill ask the guy i brought it off what its from.
Re: steering box mod
Can you post a pic of it
Re: steering box mod
Hey guys just a heads up I've been pinged on a WOF for no cert on the Steering box/Idler arm because it has been "modified". Said modification is pictured below
They seem to think it will pass a cert but wont do anything until I come back with an expensive bit of paper

Thats the gheyist thing I've seen all week.
Manual steering box from a D21 2wd Navara fits without visible modification I believe.

Re: steering box mod
that steering box looks modified to me

Re: steering box mod
It is modified.
Modified to be a bomb proof idler arm.

Re: steering box mod
So with regards to the pitman arm for the conversion I need a normal navara 2wd one for a pre 90s terrano? mines an 87 ?
Tried reading but to much to take in all the info.

Re: steering box mod
1987, shit that must be an early one.
To my knowledge, For the idler arm/steering box conversion you would need another steering box from a 1992 or earlier Terrano.
I have the same style steering box as you (Feb 1988), basically you just need another one of them.

Re: steering box mod
yea if the issue is with the modification of the box as apposed being a replacement for an idler arm then find a better wof man, any one with half a brain can tell it's stronger then the idler arm that was there
