Question??

Post by Tonkatoy. »

I have a 2011 Toyota Hilux which is going to do a bit of farm work every now and then. Can I run it with the speedo disconnected as I don't think it is fair that I pay RUC when I am not on the road but because I am not a business it is proving to be a nightmare to claim them back.
Any thoughts on this?
What is the best way around it?

Talking or prompting illegal activity is not appropriate on a public Forum.

As for claiming the off road RUC's, it can be done and you don't have to be a business.
You do need to keep a logbook though and in reality you don't do that many km's off road in comparison to on road, so usually ends up not worth it

I am not talking about or prompting illegal actions as I am not using it on public roads so how is it illegal??
I was told that not only would I have to keep a logbook I would also have to have photo's of each day to prove the vehicle is in fact off road and I would also have to provide all this to the authorities.

are you doing enough Km's on the farm to make it worthwhile would have to be a pretty big property to clock up 1000's of km's :D

Every now and then? Surely if its not often its not going to be worth the hassles :?:

And sure, who's going to stop you unplugging speedo sensor when offroad? No police check points on private land... But is it worth the effort to save a few cents? And setting fault codes etc too

a bit tricky to disable the sender on modern vehicles. the ecu uses speed as an input for various things, so it flags an error and can even go into limp mode.
the other thing does the hilux even have speedo sender ? a lot of vehicles use the ABS rings as speed pickups so theres no gearbox speed sensor anymore. some use a gearbox sensor as backup only.

i think a few guys just use GPS logs to claim back RUC.

i'm traveling around a fair few farms 5 days a week and the tight arses at work don't bother claiming it back.

Thanks to Slide & Tweake.
I am not sure if I would do enough to bother about it unless it was as easy as disconnecting the speedo like the good ole days. If I have to be aware of codes & limp mode etc then probably not worth it.
