Identifying age of a land rover

Post by jondotnet »

Hi folks,

I have an old series 2a in the shed that I am thinking about getting back on the road.

Unfortunately its not been registered for decades and isnt in the system. From the chassis number I can tell its was made in either 1966 or 1967 but not exactly when. When I spoke to VTNZ they said that the exact year of manufacture was needed.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to find out more info?

It has its original number plate but a call to NZTA gave me nothing.

I would hate to use it as parts but without identifying when it was made I may be struggling to put it back on the road.

Any advice is appreciated.

Cheers

That number doesn't appear to be correct for a Land Rover.

This link may help you find the chassis or VIN number and help identify your vehicle.

You're right, I missed out a digit

Its 25320387C

Calvin says :

253 Model: Land Rover, Series IIA
Body type: Basic
Wheel base: 109in
Engine: petrol
Model years: 1962-1971
Destination: Completely knocked down (CKD), right-hand drive (RHD)

20387 Serial number

C Design: Two significant design modifications
Suffix used from April 1966 till April 1967

Its the 66-67 bit that I need to narrow down. Its a suffix D gearbox so correct for period and a suffix H engine, again correct for that period.

I am guessing that the rego plate is long dead and no longer on the vehicle register so doing a web or carjam (http://www.carjam.co.nz/) check is out of the question?

if you really want to narrow it down the Heritage Centre Trust in UK can research the factory records and provide full details (and certificate) for a small fee.

Yep, the rego plate doesn't show up in Carjam and I have contacted the Heritage Motor Centre and they don't hold records for land rovers exported as kits. They only have records for chassis numbers 25300001 to 25311218 which were UK built. I have written to Landrover in the UK to see if they have any further records.

If I can get enough proof then I might be able to get the Series 2 club in the UK to sign off its year.

Its a shame you can't search carjam for a chassis number. If I could show that chassis numbers a few either side of mine are in 1966 or 1967 then that might help.

Just need to list of 66-67 2a LWB rego numbers to start searching with.

What does it matter if it is 66 or 67, surely if you cant find it then NZTA won't be able to either, or if they then tell you it is wrong they should be able to tell you what it should be.

From my conversations with them, they require proof of its age.

It appears that I am expected to prove its a 66 or 67 not them prove its not.

Thanks to a suggestion from someone on the landrover NZ yahoo group I have the answer!

Using car jam, I search for regos a couple of digits higher and lower than mine. This has provided a date range of 11th-13th April 1967

Hopefully that will be enough
