Hilux 2.8 LN106 advise needed. Engine change or new block?

Post by Scott88 »

Hi team

New on here and chasing some more advise on what I shall do

Got double cab 2.8 done around 300,000km recently just got new clutch, manual recon fuel injector pump, cam belt, water pump.

But have just blown rings or something a lot of smoke

Options?

Get mechanic just to replace rings and be done or

Put a reconditioned short block on can get one for around $1600??? Hopefully spend know more than $2000 total.

Or I think I may have access from a deceased estate a 5l turbo I think but apparently there could be a few engines sitting around missing few things like the head and chips? and unknown history but may get it or one of them for less than $500 will my manual fuel pump fit can it be tuned to run the 5L engine and is my gear box the same and clutch etc what's this bell housing thing people talk about costing $900 anyway long story short am I best just to stick with my original engine or is it possible to get this 5L engine running in mine under $3000 approx

Regards
Scott

find whats actually wrong with the engine. seen simple things like overfilled with engine oil causing it to blow tons of smoke, blocked breather etc.

5l don't come factory with turbo. could be a 1kz or a 5l with ct20 or aftermarket turbo.
5l is easy as its basically the same block as your 3l so everything bolts on. 1kz is harder as new mounts need to be made.

Thanks guys

Think I will stay clear of 1kz as I can see that all adding up to be expensive for an engine with unknown history. Will keep 5L in mind if one comes up but aparently there bugger all power diff anyway specially if I get a reconditioned block on my 2.8 and can always put a turbo on that down the track?? It is useing lots of oil half a dipstick every 100km approx not sure yet and blowing smoke out dip stick hole and oil filler hole. Gues next step is to look into head should I just take cheep option only do rings and get back on the road or go with the $1600 recon short block?

Cheers

check that there is plenty of blowby coming out of the breather pipe. sometimes the oil separator under the rocker cover gets gummed up.
if its blowing tons then its reco time. i doubt very much that rings only will do much. bores will be well worn and need over bore new pistons/rings.

Thanks mate

Think I know the breather pipe you are talking about would that create more oil consumption also I wonder because compression revs power seem normal but there is lots of smoke will I gain much power with recon short block? I'm not useing any water do you think I will have to do anything with the head?

My 2.8 was using a lot of oil, and no water, I got it reconditioned, had the head checked at the same time, it was cracked so had to replace that too.

She went awesome (for a 2.8 na diesel) I could hold 4th gear and 70km/h up a hill, rather than third and 60 km/h(my wifes 1.6 corolla goes up the same hill in 5th at 100km/h)

Wife also says I have spent too much on the old hilux, auto lockers front and rear, 2 inch lift, currently in the shop having the power steering box reconditioned
