FJ40 "just for bashing"

Post by diogenese »

I have got an old '40 to stop me drowning my daily drive L200, it get's tedious removing the carpets to dry them out each time!

It's running a 2F and four speed box with a SOA conversion and Legacy power rack for steering which is mounted on the axle.
The front axle is a later model with disc brakes and aisin hubs.
I have got it mobile for the first time tonight but the carb is a bit ropey so that might need swapping out, does a holley sound like a good idea?

Collection is easy if you know the right people :)

Holley will suck fuel through quicker than you can feed it in, the boy first 40 had a Holley, they need tuning to suit,

The factory carb is good if you have a good one. I've heard holley carbs are temperamental on angles - but the standard 2F carb never let me down with some crazy steep stuff hanging off the winch rope...

Is this the world's only FJ40 with rack and pinion steering? Awesome

The steering shaft must be an impressive creation to allow it to follow the axle articulation.

The section of column from the bulkhead to the rack is from a DAF truck. That has a sprung cab so the column has about 300mm of travel, way more than the 40! I'm not sure of how much water will affect the bearings in the sliding joint but that is for the future :)

Thanks Coxy, I'll look into that injection system, it's just the sort of thing that interests me.

those old leaf sprung cruisers need anti tramp bars on the axle housing to minimise the twisting that's what shears the pinions off :D

edit, just looked at your pics its SOA you might want to check your driveshaft angle as well :D

Angles are fine, I think the input flange had been loose sometime in the past as the splines were worn.
I think some tramp bars might be added to the list or things to do :)

Went out for a play on Sunday. I have got a bit of work to do on the steering, I didn't leave enough reserve travel on my steering shaft and it bottomed out on hard landings.
I also didn't do a good enough job on the waterproofing of the dizzy, it won't run under water! The water was up to the top of the body and it fired up again after dragging it out a bit :D

The front guards were shot above the reinforced bit and I just cut off the outer bit so there are not available ;) I may be able to get hold of a better pair if you are desperate, they do have rust in them but I can get a picture of them.

Playing again on Sunday. Now there are more things on the list.
Some form of roof is in order, my wipers don't work on the inside of the glass and a bucket load of stagnant river water down the back of your neck is unpleasant!
The steering is great, it has normal power assist and a low speed setting with a solenoid valve on the rack that makes it super light. I have wired it up to a switch and is good for frantic maneuvering.
Doors may make a reappearance too, gorse hurts :(

I made up a tramp bar as there is marking on the uj where it has been binding after one mild trip out. I ran out of mig gas so it can wait until Monday to get glued to the axle.

My steering arms seem to have a gap even though the bolts are tight so I might have to investigate deeper :(

probably worth trying to over fill your rear diff with the head rotated and pointed up like that the pinion bearing would be a bit lean on lubrication up there, how is the end of your tramp bar fixed does it slide up and down on that pin with the two red bushes, no disrespect intended but that mount is way under engineered for the loading they are subjected to there's a pile of shit on the net you can read about tramp bars particularly all the yank jeep shit, ih8mud etc where they all argue about the design and have big punch ups over it until the cows come home :D an old rear spring shackle is a common method of fixing the end of the tramp bar to the chassis and a bit of gusseting down the tramp bar itself doesn't hurt there's been more than one or two snap in half when they cant take it any more :x :D

Any chance of a pic of the column? Looking for a collapsable option for my ratrod.

Heath, I'll get some pics of the column tomorrow but I don't think it's what you are after. The column inside the cab is standard and I don't think the other mods would get a cert!

The torque arm link is a drop link from a mitsy sway bar, the red bushes are nolathane ones and don't slide on the shaft.
It's not the same failure, the first on was giving it a bootful from standstill on dry concrete with no torque rod. my fault :o
The second time I was being rough as I hadn't realised it had come out of 4wd. My new install of a 3B has moved the gearbox back and right a fraction and the gearbox floor cover had pushed the transfer case lever out into 2wd, just as I was getting stuck on a steep bank....
There is no sign of trauma on the drop link but there is signs of stretching on the eyes on the back of the arm, they are SJ413 spring eye bushes in a bit of pipe. I'll change the pipe to thicker wall stuff and think about changing the droplink too.

If you do try and mount it closer to the diff head for added strength. ;-)
