4D56 mods
ive got a 4d56-t l200 and looking at doing a few things to it, as its a common engine being in other vehicles so someone must have modded there's, so far Ive bolted on a intercooler form the Pajero but looking at maybe increasing the boost a small amount or getting a bigger turbo but in saying that the top end isnt what i'm worried about its the bottom end the 4d56 is a bit gutless down low, generally when taking hills, anyone have any suggestions ? turning up boost wont help bottom end will it ? and bigger turbo would be harder to spoil up and just be a waste of time correct ?
Re: 4D56 mods
Before you play with turbos or fuelling, you NEED to get yourself an EGT gauge.
Without it, you've got very little chance of finding that line between extra go and meltdown.
Jaycar do a cheap kit but a nice and proper gauge is the best way.
Does your fuel pump have a boost compensator on it (reduces fuel before the turbo wakes up)? If so is it adjustable?

i'm not sure if it has a boost compensator, what do they look like ?

A pressure line running from your intake manifold down to the fuel injection pump. It will join on the pump to a pressure actuator or sensor of some description. Usually a short fat cylinder.

i'll hav to have a look but i'm positive i dont have one hav to get back to you on that, thanks
Re: 4D56 mods
a mate of mine has a gen 1 paj and has put the intercooler on , and cranked the boost to about 13psi upped the fuel and advanced the fuel pump timing , it has a srtaight through exhaust with no muffler 2.5inch pipe, and it pulls from around 1500 right round to 5grand,the worst bit was lining him up in my scudo on the grass and i only gained on him once i got into 4th and 5th
, that was in low range, we did it about 5 times to make sure it wasnt a fluke,so i got me a v6 paj manual
, now we will see.if you want to know more pm your nunmber and i will get him to ring you, (hes a diesel mech). and this is from a old motor with god knows how many ks on it.

Re: 4D56 mods
yeah it has a pipe that runs from the turbo too the injector pump to a little fat like cylinder like you said so it does have that thing !

Right.
Sometimes they're adjustable, if it is then finding the fine line between more go and no smoke can be a big help. Basically these devices restrict fuel before the turbo builds boost, stopping smoke but also making the turbo slower to spool.
Adjusting it can acheive some very good improvements in drivability.

Re: 4D56 mods
cool that sounds good, would i get any benefits from it if i played with it at the mo with no mods ? as that pump was a non turbo pump which i just unbolted the top section and bolted the turbo part on that cylinder part etc, so maybe the pumps still running lean or something ? it drives alright but maybe could be better, i see one screw in the pic just below the cable but unsure what it is ?

Re: 4D56 mods
cancelthe idea of that screw head just went and had a look at a spare pump and the bolt goes right thru and doesnt turn so must be for something else but i did notice this hex bolt just below the cylinder in the pic and i think thats it!

Re: 4D56 mods
I don't know the inner workings of that one yet, is there a friendly diesel injection shop anywhere nearby you?
Opening it up would easily show what adjustments are possible, but I don't know if you want to risk going that far.

Re: 4D56 mods
yeah i might open it up the spare one anyway, been reading about advancing diesel pump timing too, sounds interesting some people say it helps heaps but they where talking about the 4m40 2.8 pajero engine, so what way is to advance if you looking at the engine i might advance mine a little see what happens!

Inline pumps (like mine) are timed by rotating the whole pump. But your pump being a rotary should have internal adjustment for delivery timing.
Advancing the timing increases the efficiency, but it raises the peak combustion pressures quite a lot which makes it harder on the pistons, head, conrods, crank etc.

yeah mine you unbolt and twist the whole pump has like 3 - 4 bolts also which way do you turn it to advance ?

Viewed from the flywheel end, anticlockwise is advance, clockwise is retard.

Re: 4D56 mods
cool yup tried that 2night think i went to far coz it was super hard to start , so i turned it back a bit and seems good now, engine sounds like it pinking a little but it sounds good and i might be imagining it but the power feels more consist thru the rev range then before

More advanced will give more diesel clatter, retarded sounds smoother.
Too far advanced means more black smoke (diesel that gets cooked to carbon before it burns completely), too far retarded will give you white smoke (incompletely burn't diesel).
After trying about 6 different combinations on my Isuzu, I'm back to the factory setting.

ahh right i see so its basically just tinkering, what isuzu motor you got ? thanks for the help too i'm still kenn to turn my boost up 2 psi must find a egt gauge i looked on the jay car website but couldnt find anything ? they hard to fit having to tap into the manifold correct ? i dont really have the tools for that

I've got the Isuzu 4BD1T, It's almost 4 litres and runs 20psi boost. Goes quite well.

Here's the jaycar kit
http://www.jaycar.co.nz/productView.asp ... BCATID=347
They also do a K type handheld reader for under $50, then you just need a probe which will cost $50-100 depending on where you get it from.
Manifolds are usually cast iron and drill and tap very nicely. If you can take the manifold off you should be able to get someone to drill and tap it for less than the cost of the tap. I paid about $30 for a steel compression fitting to hold my probe. Brass ones go soft and lose their grip at exhaust temps.

flip 20psi that must eat diesel, whats it in ? you seem to know alot are you a mechanic ? also found this on ebay in the states but its in Fahrenheit but its already got the probe and doesnt cost the earth http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2-52mm-E ... 0265042568

I'll bet it could eat diesel if you could run it at full power. But it's hard to use full boost for more than a minute or two on the longest hills and it gets to the speed limit quickly enough.
Running at 100km/h on a flat road it's on 8-9psi. It's in a rangerover and does a steady 10km/l which is better than most lighter japanese vehicles.
I'm a mechanical engineer (I design machinery), cars are a hobby of mine, I do all my own work on them.

i have a 4d55 2.3 running 23psi and redlines at 6000rpm i shall post a link to a video of it when i have uploaded it, was at 25Psi but kept poping the relief valve open so had to knock it back... sounded cool tho

1991 v44lwb Paj...4d55 2.3 23psi boost ALRIGHT, T-max 10000, rto1 33", ball joint flip, 6"lift in rear, 45mm bodylift Custom winchbar and obstical shifter(bumper) rear locker, modified turbo, 3"exhaust

Re: 4D56 mods
How about that video Pajmad??
i would love to get my 4D56 to swing to 6000rpm.. what did you do for cooling? and what mods did u do to the Injector pump/injectors etc.. how much boost are you running?
I live in Trinidad, and i have a Mitsu L200. i want to build a nice reliable powerful 4d56 engine.. i already have a Block with crank rods and pistons put down.. just have to clean them up a bit.. thinking about doing a KNife edge on the crank and have it balanced after.. ThoughS?
