LPG

Post by jumper »

i spoke to someone today about getting the lpg setup on my chev 350 going again, looks like i will need at least a new mixer and the tank needs a retest. he suggested that the lpg setup should be only lpg not a duel fuel setup so that the engine can be setup correctly for lpg.

has anyone got a lpg only setup? had any problems?

I run a duel fuel setup on the 2F FJ40. I don't know why you'd want LPG only. You can't carry extra gas cans of the stuff. Nothing wrong with a duel fuel setup - just set the timing with a bit of extra advance cos LPG is slower burning and higher octane, and get plugs a grade hotter with slightly smaller gap. It'll still run fine on petrol, just maybe not quite as well as it could. If you get pinging due to the extra advance, you might want to use high octane petrol. Heaps better to have a slight loss of performance on petrol, than be stranded with no gas!

I had a dual fuel 2F FJ40 and now have a dedicated 3F FJ70. Much prefer the reassurance of dual fuel. As muddy said advance timing a tad (I think mine was about 2-5 degrees)and run one grade hotter plugs with 0.1mm smaller gap.
I have chatted to the original owners of the 70 I have. They pulled the petrol out because there were business benefits to LPG only. I don't think they exist nowadays. Also they stuck the LPG tank where the petrol tank was. Didn't make much difference to the tank hanging down.
I think you'd be mad to pull petrol out if you don't have to. It gives you that reassurance of being able to get fuel anywhere (and take jerrycans away).

My 5c, nay, 10c now.

i have often thought about doing a dedicated lpg setup but use forklift tanks so in theory you wouldn't need to get it certified is that a silly idea and if you are going away for a few days you can just hire a few extra tanks for the weekend

Automotive LPG cylinders must be permanently mounted (ie you cannot use forklift cyls in cars). Alternative fuels requrie certification as part of WOF and fork cyls wouldn't get LPG one.

That type of thing might be fine in a bush basher, but LPG supplier should ensure the cylindrs they supply are being used correctly (& safely).

Ah yes, LPG, let me do my rant....

I've had LPG falcons for years. XE was LPG only, standard motor, and once dyno tuned it was pretty good. XF was dual, and having to tune "50/50" (petrol/LPG) means you lose a little power either way, but with a 350 chev, you aint gonna notice that!!! Current ride is a factory fitted dedicated LPG AU2, which has a higher compresion motor than standard (10:1 vs 9.5:1) as LPG + high compression = more bang!! I luuuuurve LPG. I believe that this brings the usable octane to around 95ish. If you turbo LPG to a comp ratio of 11.5:1, you get 103....... check this out ;) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HeQO89l8ohU

That said, I completely agree with the other guys, make it dual. Especially with 4wd'ing. The last thing you need is to run out of gas, considering most dual systems only run a 65lt tank, and you have a 350....... even an 80lt tank aint gonna last long, plus you generally use 10% more volume/km than petrol. The guy you mention is right, LPG only will run better, but I'd only worry about that if you were running a 1300 suzuki, not a 350
