Just getting into 4wding

Post by BadCo »

Hello everyone,

I have just started into 4wding after the purchase of my truck four months ago. I have been reading this forum occasionally, although not a lot of land rover info, still a good resource for 4wding in general in NZ.

Bought me this beast, you may have seen it around West Auckland. It's one of a kind in NZ.

Hank, is a 1988 Land Rover 110 Perentie, ex Australian Army, ARN 48 369.

It is one of 38 Personnel Carriers around, and the only Personnel Carrier in NZ. It was brought over by grays in February and auctioned off along with three GS soft tops and a Survey.

It is powered by a 3.9L Isuzu mated to 4sp LT95a with a LT230 transfer case.

Planning on a few alterations, such as:
-Power steering, to handle bigger tires
-Bigger tires, original steel Treks are bad in sand
-Turbo, really needs it to reach its full potential
-Dyna matting the interior so I don't go deaf plus a few other little things.

Mainly I want to get rid of anything unreliable, so lights are changing to LEDs, glass cartridge fuses changed to the blade type and eventually axles will be replaced with strong after market ones.

Have been on a few day trips on Muriwai and once to Woodhill where I broke the rear output shaft on the transfer case. Good fun driving a 2.3 ton front wheel drive truck through the forest!

Any questions just give me a shout. Also if you are the owner of another Perentie in NZ then PM me!

Cheers,

Nice wagon, good to see ya on here.
Plenty landy lovers/haters on here, so you will indeed get some friendly banter and always plenty of support.

Cheers Paul.

Yeah cheers, haven't copped too much flack yet from other 4wd owners. I think the army thing makes them think twice haha.

Also the looks on kids faces are priceless.

Very cool vehicle. Interesting that they went back to the Series style double skinned roof and no alpine windows arrangement.

I am interested in the part about the LT95a transmission + LT230 transfer.
I get the 'a' part about the tapered roller bearing upgrade but I thought the LT95 had an integrated transfer case.
Or do these vehicles run duals?

You are correct, they are one. Although they don't share oil. I just didn't think to go into too much detail at the time.

Good spotting though.

In essence its a LT230.

Yeah apparently the truck drives better if I switch the 0.996 (26 tooth) ratio to a 28 tooth Range Rover ratio. Which also helps when I get my 33" mud tires.

Although I need to test drive another truck first before I go for that.

Yeah 43 degrees is a tad warm haha. When I get around to insulating it I'm not sure if I should take the Safari Roof off or leave it on. When 4wding bits of trees rattle between the two skins!

EDIT: Now I look odd because the post I was responding too has disappeared...

I have managed to source some Wolf rims, anyone know where I can get them sand blasted, zinc'd and painted?
