does prado diff head have to be high pinion?
does prado diff head have to be high pinion?
just been told kzj78 front diff head has to be a high pinion head. a rear one doesn't fit in the front. is this correct?
kzj78 front and rear, 130 185 surf rears, other hilux front and rears (not ifs) all fit each other? forgetting ratios.

Re: does prado diff head have to be high pinion?
Will fit in just have to change the steering as there a drag link the runs under it
Re: does prado diff head have to be high pinion?
so with cross over steering a normal hilux/surf/rear prado diff head would fit? bolt patterns all the same?

Re: does prado diff head have to be high pinion?
If you ran hi steer a hilux front or hilux/surf rear will fit in front
Re: does prado diff head have to be high pinion?
Hi, yes that is my understanding, except if it is a toyota electric locking diff housing.
Cheers

Re: does prado diff head have to be high pinion?
Can takes a bit of grinding tho
Re: does prado diff head have to be high pinion?
electric locking prado rear diff head on TM but he just said no actuator with it. he's got one but wants 500 for that. so unless I can find actuator a LOT cheaper than that i'll go back to original plan of auto locker in front.

Re: does prado diff head have to be high pinion?
You are wanting to get a locker into the front of your Prado?
Fitting a rear locker to the front (if it is possible), then having to change all the steering and then get a cert for the steering modifications will become a very costly exercise.
An auto locker is a hell of a lot lot cheaper. It can be a bit of a nuisance offroad with the auto locker in the front but I have one and it is good. I have to do the odd three point turn due to the locker but it is a pretty good compromise. On road no issues as long as you have free wheeling hubs disengaged.

Re: does prado diff head have to be high pinion?
What motor will you be running??? the reason i ask is that the high pinion diff is much stronger than a low pinion in the front, i would be looking at getting a center for the high pinion will save you diff cost at the end of the day. alternatively if you already have a center in a low pinion it will fit in the high pinion will just need new side bearings. my 2c

Re: does prado diff head have to be high pinion?
A mate of mine used a low pinion diff when he sas'ed his 185 surf. It was the easyist option for steering, panhard, sump clearance.
He might pop up, there is a thread here about it somewhere

Yes. Absolutely.
I ran a normal hilux head in my prado housing with different steering.

Thats me!!! Yeah shes no worries, havnt read the rest of this post so it may already be covered but the main issue is the steering needs relocated to the front of the diff. With that you loose the steering damper mount on the knuckle end. Unless your running leaf spring (no panhard) then you will find it difficult to fit on the front as well.
Deff do-able though.
P.S. Hi Glen

what steering did you use? probably in your build thread but quicker to ask.

problem is with the 130 I would want to change the diff and the motor. I've had petrol and diesel 60's, 61's, 130's and now a 185 3.4 v6, quite like the 3.4.
