reviving the bighorn

Right so its time to get this pighorn breathing right again, its been nana'd for 18 years.

Its the 4jb1 t intercooled motor
Auto :cry:

Have just fitted a boost gauge to see where things are at and its at a solid 10psi through the whole rev range after about 2000 psi.

Before that its sluggish as hell
What can I do to beter take off?

Removing egr is top of the list over the next 2 weeks, will be doing the full service as well incl all filters.

Is it OK to play with fuel screw now? Is it safe so long as these no smoke?

I've read upping boost to 15psi on these is safe??

Ultimately I want to do exhaust first then up fuel and boost, but won't be doing exhaust this side of Xmas..

Anything ive missed? Cleaning intercooler and intake a good idea?

Exhaust will make all the difference when I changed mine on the rugger full boost was achieved about 500 rpm earlier. Probably would be a good idea to fit egt gauge before playing with fuel screw.

Yeah mate clean it all out and do your valve clearances at the same time
Heres what the intake on my 1990 Terrano looked like

I found the EGR had been long blocked off anyway
I also fitted a catch can at the same time, it revs a whole lot smoother and cleaner now, exhaust is next on the list before it gets more boost and dieseline shoved up it :mrgreen:

Definitely do EGT and full exhaust from turbo back before turning up the wick. The stock exhaust with the cold weather heater valve in it is very restrictive. You will probably find you will be able to bust 800c in long hill climbs with the exhaust as stock so more fuel would not be high on my list!

Gave it the service.
No noticeable improvement anywhere

I think due to white smoke when cold starting, and sluggish take off, it needs a catch can and intake clean, and probably injectors serviced and cleaned

white smoke is a injector stuck open leaking fuel
89 safari, pto winch, 33x15 simexs. sliders,75mm lift . turbo intercoolered

Are these easy enough to clean?
I need to separate fuel lines from injectors anyway when I remove intake manifold to clean that out..

Hoping a clean is all they need, might try a double dose of injector cleaner first.

Egr vac lines have been disconnected but the egr system is still intact so that's gota come out and all associated plumbing removed too

Been thinking about this white smoke on cold start up and it has got considerably worse since doing the oil change and all the filters... Thoughts?

Does it run smooth on start up, could be in need of new glow plugs.

Did you replace the diesel fuel filter when you did the full service? :D

Turned the fuel up to the point where I can see the faintest hint of black smoke under load, virtually not even there, its made a good difference throughout and take off from a stand still is no longer painfully slow.

I drive 40ks a day and dont thrash it so should be safe

All back together now, complete intake system cleaned, egr removed, catch tank fitted, feels a lot cleaner and smoother, more responsive and the massive white cloud if smoke I got on cold start ups has completely gone, so happy with that, just put in some expensive injector cleaner too so see how that goes

good result, well done.
It is quite rewarding bringing an older 4wd back to a decent standard.
