nissan IFS CVs: where to source?

Post by BlakeNZ »

I'm looking to acquire one or two CVs as trail spares for my Mistral R20 ETi. Where is the best place to get them? It has an R180 with "3 groups of two bolts" that attaches the axle to the diff flanges. 27 spline I'm told. Am i best to source from nissan, or are they really expensive? Is there an aftermarket brand that is stronger? should i obtain them second hand?
I'm hoping/assuming that the axle will be the same as a certain WD21 Terrano, but not sure. Any experience in this area would be welcomed. Thanks.

Genuine only mate if you want it to actually last. If your truck is part time 4wd then some off a parts truck probably haven't done alot of ks so will still be good and oem tough...

I've never found aftermarket cvs stronger than genuine (longfields etc excluded)
IFS all the way...go the mark 1 Pajero!

I popped an outer bell yesterday trying to get up a high traction ledge in a section called Diff Dinger or something similar. Had wheels turned quite a bit in a shitty spot.
Rear diff was hung up completely so driver side front was trying to pull the whole vehicle off the rock and up. In retrospect I should have taken a bit more time to negotiate the section. Also it was at the limits for a vehicle on 33" tires, the other guys were running 35-37s.

Heres the moment of it popped. The rock in front of the driver wheel is what finished it off as I tried to bump it over.

The rear diff clearance is really pissing me off.

I just continued in 3wd and drove it home. Later I'll do a write up on how to change them. If you have air tools it takes about 10 mins to swap out a CV. And with IFS the carnage is all isolated so theres no domino carnage effect.

Niscars in Lower Hutt will hook you up with a spare CV.
