Pushing out a seized brake piston

Post by Heath »

Had a sticky brake piston in the calipers I am rebuilding. Tried everything heat etc.

Surfed the net and found a method using grease gun to presurise the caliper and push the piston out. After another hour of mucking around I figured other than spending money and someone else doing it I would give it a crack.

BUGGER ME it worked. Real slow but simple as pie. Just messy and used a bit of grease to do it. So another problem resolved.

Google "seized brake piston grease gun method" for how to do it.

Now I just need to get some new pistons and seals etc. Might give rare spares and Gasson motors a ring (and safe r brakes too) and see what they have.

Tried soaking for 3 days, heating, tapping with hammer, hitting with hammer harder. More heat and crc, compressed air (worked for other one) more tapping and finally the grease gun method.

Handy tip to know as I'm about to tackle my calipers in the next couple of weeks.

Also works on spigot bearings.

or keep pumping the brake pedal with the caliper hanging in a bucket before removing the brake hose

Could use bread as well, I use bread on spigot bearings, much less messy than grease.
