2.4td into a yn65

Post by G34R5 »

ALLLRRIIGGHHTTYYY THEN! well found that my little 3y after having its head gasket replaced 6 months ago has now fucked again lol could be gasket could be head or even block, but anyways thought nows time to change the engine.

So i have big 4wd trip coming up so plan could be to get an 80s model surf with the 2.4 td and then take that truck on trip then come back and swap the engine into my yn65, now what im wanting to know is how easya swap would it be, like could i just unbolt the old engine swap em over, wire in glow plugs and put the fuel pump in and she good to go or what? and how long would it take, like i leave for this trip on the 22nd, think i could swap the engine over in a couple days and take my main truck on trip? lol reason im swaping engine is that my little yn65 if ofcourse the beam front axle compared to the ifs of the diesel, and would rather swap engine to SAS the diesel haha

i think the big thing to check is engine mounts. you may need to cut and weld in new ones.
if it was a diesel it would be a simply swap but petrol to diesel i'm not to sure on.

also check the fuel lines. check its big enough and that your yn65 has a return back to tank. i think its 8mm in and 6mm return.

yeah well the idea is to buy an whole other diesel surf so if need to i can switch the fuel lines and tank and everything if it just ends up being easier, but i would imagine they all the same mounts, mates got a ln65 diesel lux and pretty sure his 2lt mounts are round the same as my 3ys

It will not be a couple days job.
Just the fact that your asking, and unsure of the simpler details like fuel lines and engine mounts suggests you will struggle let alone get it done in 2 days.

U can do it, but allow a lot of time

Engine mounts are in a different location from petrol to diesel, about 50mm apart from memory, everything is doable but if you definitely want a going truck for your trip deadline, I would find a good diesel truck and use that, then tackle the swap afterwards.
You will need to swap looms and dash (for glowplug lights, rev counter etc), radiator, air box and lots of minor things like fuel lines fuel filter housings, Not a job to be completed in a few days by an amateur.
Your petrol Surf should have 4.5 ratio diffs, the diesel one will have 4.3, so your petrol diffs with the diesel engine will be a better combo if you are running larger tyres.
This will require a cert as well.

Given the engine itself is usually the cheapest part of an engine swap there's no way I'd ever swap a POS 2L-T into anything. If you really want a beam axle 2.4 turbo diesel wagon go buy a Prado, It'll be better & cheaper.

yeah looking into getting a surf with a 5m in it and swapping bits and bobs over to make one decent truck but this all depends on sale of my v6 which fell through so wont be happening anytime soon and dont think ill have a truck sorted for this trip haha unless i take like 20L of oil or just take the v6 haha but righto then so diesel is different to petrol mounts and yeah thought it would need all dash and wireing redone ae no worries.
