rear end problems

Post by HACK1N »

hey guys, I have a 1991 Toyota surf LN130

owned my truck for almost a year now and lately I've been having trouble with the rear axles leaking diff fluid....
I've replaced both side axle seals and it worked for a while,
the other day i noticed the problem looking underneath with the diff fluid coming out of the hub onto the tyre I have taken it out for a couple trips, I cant work out what the problem is

pulled it all apart, everything seems to be sweet axle seals appear to be fine, factory diff breather isn't blocked
oil is a watery brown, what should I do next??
I've tried another ln130 axle in it before but didn't work

I was thinking it could just be the 33s on it and the seals not liking the cornering at speeds as I do take it for long drives away camping

HELP!!!

every time i had leaking seals in the rear of my ln130 it was usually a shure sign the the wheel bearing had wear alowing it to leak out the bottom of the seal new wheel bearing and problem went away although with the 33s i found it was happening more often as the wheel bearings arent that great of a setup

im at that point im thinking to replace it all again including the wheel bearings and hope for the best, I was hopng it wouldn't be wheel bearing as they are pressed

Have you got diff breathers in the truck? If yes check they not blocked if no fit some as factory vent might be blocked which if diffs hit cold water when hot would preasurees the diff as there no where for the air to go

ive had the brake cylinder leak slightly causing a leak on tire and didnt effect the braking - worth a shot looking at them

Id say diff housing is bent . meaning the axles seals arent sealing fully letting oil slip past.

just pulled both axles out and seems the side that was leaking has more play in wheel bearing and the other side none, time for new wheel bearings etc., and ill go from there

I did mine this way. Cut carefully but not all the way on two opposite sides, then give them a whack with a chisel and off they come (I'm talking about the collars that hold the bearings on, cant remember what I did to get the bearings off but fairly sure I was able to pull them off). Putting them back on was fairly straight forward with a length of appropriate sized pipe.

Don't know if that helps or not. I did this as part of my build when I converted to disks on the back. Never had any issues with oil leaks, running 35's and an auto locker.

Good luck.

Check for wear on the collar that the seal runs on. Also check that the last guy didn't chop the collar off with a grinder and nick the axle. I had one like this and it leaked down between the press fit collar and the axle. A small bead of gasket sealant around the top (oil side) of where the axle and the collar meet fixed it

I had 2 axles where the muppet who did them gassed the collar off & in doing so cut a nick out of them & also over heated them ...a yr or so later I broke 1 driving back from west coast ..wheel fell off doing 80kmh ... a slightly scary experience.
