What's the best 24volt winch to buy ?

Post by 4x4rookie »

Looking at buying a new 24 volt winch, but gee there's a huge range out there with each seller claiming their winches to be the best ! Any advice please on the best (or worst to avoid), looking for 12000lb to 12500lb and value for money !

Gidday,

www.winch.co.nz - Speak to Mike.

I've had the 12v - 12500lb one on my 80 series for 2 years... never let me down and awesome value for money.

What's the best is a bit like how long is a piece of string.
You really have to decide what do you want it for, how often it will get used and what your budget is.

I personally like the Warn winches, especially the 8274-50 (only 8000lb though). Yes, you pay more for them now but I have never had to replace solenoids, or motor and yes I have worked it hard over the years.
It has seen out several vehicles in that time too.
I have used CRC soft seal on all wiring connections and the solenoids to water proof and protect them.
Buried deep in Thompson Track mud, under water it still goes and has never let me down when needed.

And that is the thing. It needs to work when you are stuck a long way from help, so reliability is very important for me.

The other important factor with electric winches is that you need a good quality battery with high cranking amps.

Just having a look at pulling power, I was thinking 12000lb as the winch is going on a 2 1/2 ton safari, however, do I need to go that big, i.e, would an 8000lb get me out of most situations ?
cheers

If it's going on a Safari - then assuming it has a manual gearbox, you'd get far more pulling power and reliability at lower cost by getting a PTO setup

I'd go for a 9-10 000 pound as they are faster, 12000 they gear down to get the power. Then if you get really stuck do a double line pull for more grunt. Easier to slow a winch down for more power than it is to speed one up
