Hi all,
Me and a couple of buddies are heading down to the 42nd this weekend, with the intention of camping etc. From what I've heard, the track is fairly tame, and probably driveable in a couple of hours? Can anyone confirm this?
If this is the case, does anyone know any decent tracks within an hour or two drive from there? 2 well set up 80's, lockers, winches etc etc, so looking for something a little more challenging.
Cheers in advance!
Jay
Tracks near 42nd
Re: Tracks near 42nd
tihoi end of pureora has some neat tracks. Pretty dry at the moment too. I cruised almost everything I drove but could be a bit hard without someone thats been there before. I had Some taupo drivers invite me on a trip. Theres quite a network. Definitely pick up some bush rash, possibly some panel bruising if you don't have bars and theres a few sneaky REAL soft watery pumice spots i ran into and had to winch. Be a different story in winter. Truck was a swb patrol, 35 creepys and lockers.
Check on wams where the tracks are as theres a bit of private land in there thats not marked/fenced and you should stick to the public land.
Otherwise ngaroma is an option but will be a dustbowl.

Have to actually be careful around that side of Pureora at the moment as they're getting ready for logging in that area soon so have actually closed off the tracks (without actually blocking them off). Tread carefully, we don't want people getting into trouble. Stick to cutover stuff that has already been logged to be safe if you still intend on visiting.
source: Practically grew up wheeling in there and know plenty of locals & those in the know regarding access to the area
On a side note, make sure you post some photos & details on what 42nd is like at the moment, we heading down in a few weeks for a play ourselves.

you will do most of the main track in 2wd this time of the year, expect pinstriping and maybe a broken wing mirror arieal on the western end, creeks are relatively low, about 2 1/2 foot deep at the most.
you may get water ingress in the cabin if your not lifted. but nothing major.
we are going back through and the end of the season when it's a bit more"fun" so to speak.
going east to west is more fun when its wet as the logs laid down are slippery along with the volcanic soil /clay mix makes for interesting driving

Cheers for your input guys, will head down and see how it goes... at worst, will be some great scenery and swesome camping spots!
Will be sure to take lots of pics!
Both trucks are lifted 6" on 35's, so should be sweet... and not too worried about pinstriping - will blend in with the rest of the truck!
Cheers,
Jay
