Stripped head bolt help

So I went to do the headgasket on the escudo today and one of the 8mm allen key head studs decided it wanted to round itself off.

Does anyone have any tricks or other sockets I can use to get this undone? was the last one which was typical.. Normally id just try hammer a smaller socket on but being an allen key im not sure.

This is my first suzuki headgasket but seems abit strange they use allen key end headstuds..

Should I just drill off the head of the bolt then slide the head off and try use vice grips or weld a nut on the end then rather than worrying about it now??

Smack a large easyout into the head of the bolt?

put the other head bolts back in around it and tighten them up, then get a an old socket just smaller then the outer edge of the head bolt and bash it on with a large hammer.

A it will go on that tight it will grip, and B the hammer hitting the top of the bolt will shock it. once undone then undo the rest again.

Have you cleaned all the gunge out of the allen head? Do as crash says and put the few around last one back in as you try undo it. Have you got a high quality impact allen key socket? The difference between a cheapy and a good one may just be the difference in loosening it. Hammer it down before trying and use a very long powerbar to progressively add torque. If its really wrecked you may be able to find a torx or spline bit that will hammer in and grip.

if you try smacking a tight socket over the hex head don't use one out of your good socket set try and find an old orphan so it wont matter if you end up splitting or rooting the socket :D

I'd have thought the allen head bolts were round so don't know how sockets are gonna help given how tight the bolts would be. Surely they would just spin. Go the hammered torx bit way if a fresh allen key and heaps of pressure doesn't work. The spline on the torx deforms easier and should fit the bolt better. An impact driver with the right size could work to, I think they might be 8mm. Not a rattle gun but one of these.

you will be surprised, remember you are sacrificing a socket here...it will (should be belted on) be so tight on the head of the bolt it may even split down the side.

need one of those been there done that smilies :mrgreen:

Sacrifice an Allen key and weld it in.

A welded Allen key will become very brittle possibly shatter and slice your hand open :roll: not that ive done it before (cough again haha),

I use a 1/2 inch stud remover for lil bugger like this, may need to cut head off to get it to fit over shank. Use a breaker bar on it.
The knurled off center cam engages on the shank and bobs ya uncle :mrgreen:

That and an oil soaked engine and welding dont really go hand in hand especially if any hot slag goes down the drain back holes.

Went and purchased a new cobolt drill bit and it ate through it real fast then once the head was off it was loose as. Cheers
