Does a gearbox crossmember need a cert?

I've mangled my gearbox crossmember on my l200 again.
If I make a new one that is different but uses the original bolt mountings to the chassis and gearbox rubber mount is that classed as a repair or will it need a cert?
I was thinking about a two piece item out of plate steel one above the torsion bars and one below with some lattice between them.

Repair doesn't need cert, but what you describe sounds like a modification not a repair. Modification needs cert.

Gearbox cross member is a tricky one. Reading through the thresholds on the LVVTA site everything seems to suggest that if you are not altering the crash structure (frontal protection laws) you are all good.
until you get to the bit about gearbox substitution. Which says :
 The OE gearbox cross-member has not been heated, cut, or welded; and
 the OE gearbox cross-member mounting to the OE body or chassis members is unchanged; and
 no replacement gearbox cross-member is used

Now, you are not changing the gearbox, but you are doing a lot of the first line.
If I were you I'd contact them, http://www.lvvta.org.nz/contact.html and see what they say. They are usually pretty fast to reply.

I am going to continue my bash plate back further to the crossmember but the standard one is the lowest point and I want to get the underside flat if I can. If it needs a cert then I'll just add plates to protect it.

All good until involved in a sticky situation such as an accident and insurance investigators see an uncerted modification to the vehicle... Wouldn't like to think what could happen.

Sure you may get away with it, but for what it's worth, would you really want to risk it?

I'm fairly certain that I could make a crossmember and bash plate that wouldn't be noticed at wof but I want to keep it legal.
I don't want all the restrictions that come along with certification for such a small change
I'll be on the hunt for a a tidy second hand one.

Imho there shouldnt be to much hassle as all you will want certed is the one cross member and that is all they will be looking at. On saying that if you have other work done previously and not complied then the cert man my pull you up on those. Then again if done properly then get them ticked off as well

Getting up to Mistake flat with a couple of FJ40's on 35's means it has to take a beating to keep up hopefully my '40 will be fixed again for the next trip.
