Narrowing rim width to help hold bead

hey guys been having trouble with my tyre/rim combo ever since i got them years back, brand new 15x7s and 30x9.5 bighorns. when i air down they seem to break a bead too easy and im not airing down much.. ive had them pop at as much as 15 psi or more, i don't go below 10psi. i have mates with 30x9.5s on factory 5.5" rims and they dont have these issues... Is it worth taking an inch out of the rim to get a bit more pressure on the bead. steel surgeon will do them for 40$+gst each but they are not sure if it will help...

usually just drop a bead but in this one came right off as i was trying to get out of the creek.. the front left is popped too...not ideal and not carrying a spare on this occasion

Get rid of that glossy Power coating, try a none glossy paint ( zinc ) maybe sand blasting then zincing.

I use tubes on 7 inch rims and go down to 6 psi with no problems

chop the rims down and by default the powder coating will by sorted as well.

will fix the issue and become a whole lot more reliable

That is until you spin the rim in the tube and rip your valve stem out. Over time this may happen little by little until it finally lets go.

Another thing you could try is mount the tyre with a good layer of windscreen goo on both beads to glue it on to the rim.

Hammerite or a similar rough texture paint on the inside of the rim where the bed sits, rough surface holds te tyre better, or some gorilla glue or similar, makes it a pain to get the tyres off though.

on my scudo i ran 5.5 inch jimny wheels with 30,9.5s and very rarely popped a bead,tubes are more trouble than what there worth.like others say scuff the powder coating around where the bead seats.

i would try scuffing the paint up first.
also do you glue the tires on? by glue i just mean patch glue. makes them stick to the rim a lot better but you can still get the tire off the rim without ripping the tire.

If your going to the trouble of splitting them and narrowing them, spend the extra $80 and beadlock them. No brainer.

Narrower rim or bigger/ wider tyre. You could probably get some secondhand rims for $40 each.

automotive urethane. works wonders, makes good gaskets too as it's impervious to pretty much every thing.

Depends what brand. Some don't like oil or petrol much. Ok for tyres though

cheers for the replies... got some things to try.. im thinking narrowing would help... that plus dulling the powercoat + glue?. Not interested in bead lockers.. its not a serious 4wd and if i change rims i'd likely loose offset.

Tek screws through the bead works wonders then. will mean you have spares to put your vehicle back together when it falls apart too.

if your going to the trouble of getting the rims chopped and welded back up you might as well do it properly and get them bead locked instead it'll be money better spent and give you a better result
