Advice on VX cruisers

Post by Big »

Howdy all, Im stuck at which truck to get for a tow wagon.. looking at a recond 12v done millions of kms but bugger all since recond OR 350+km on a 24 valve model..? Can someone tell me any major probs with the 24 valve model? as I know big ends etc and a big thing for the 12 valve model,
Add intercoolers to both and they will go great.. anything else I should be aware of? both are auto's as manuals are hard to find..

Anyone got some sound advice and or steer clear advice..? cheers loads K

What is it about the Auto lockup that needs attention?
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

Talking to auto repair in otahuhu ak. he told me to be awere that the lock up clutches start to glaze.
Once it wears to a certain part it strips the glaze and the " bits" travel through the system creating more damage.
He said that once you start getting a shuddering when coming off cruising down to a stop its the sign that the glaze is starting to wear and time for repair.
He also said "fit a big ass trans cooler" and the boxes are super strong if maintained. Just be awere of the lock up issue.
He also said that there is no after market stuff available to make them strong cause they already are

Haha now you know as much as me.
Which at the end of the day isn't much

Just a thought.. does the lockup clutchs repair need the auto to be out? knowing the 1uzfe box I'm thinking yes..? so basically a recon box anyway? have to factor this in..lol

Yes the box has to be removed as they need to open up the torque converter.
Auto man said that rebuild is not generally required if auto has been maintained

Its a bit like saying "rebuild your manual box because you are doing a clutch"

Up to you of course

Something else is that both autos may require repair. I just bought it up as the only issue with the auto is the lock up system. Unless the rebuilt 12v has had the t/c looked at it is proberly more at risk due to more k's on the clock.

Imho i would treat it as maintenance and buy the 24v anyway.

I brought a 24v auto not long ago with more ks than the one your looking at,all seems good.
Its does have a full service history from new, which made me not so worried about the mileage

Hey K

im loving my 12v i have just got a few minor things need doing on the list are things you have listed but seams a good all round truck auto TC is on the list as its done 360kms but other than that its a mint truck love it. Just a question whats the advantages of 24 over 12 for my future reference?

Hey

I'm fairly new to the 80 scene. Picked up my 12v 80 a few weeks back and loving it. Does everything I need. Tow, fits the family, capable offroad.

Here are my list of things to look out for:

- Rust around the rear side windows.
- Window motors are crap, make sure they work and the windows haven't popped out of their holders.
- Over 300k do the big end bearing caps for peace of mind.
- Check around the steering box mounts as they are prone to crack in that area. There is apparently a plate you can get to strengthen that area.
- Bottom swivel housing arms tend to come loose.
- Get the triple diff lock version (I did and it's great)
- The drivers seat outer padding seems to collapse fairly easily.
- Roof paint is usually stuffed, especially in our sun. Check how bad it is, i.e: surface rust already forming etc. Have heard you can rub fish oil all over it and it looks great again.

The only thing I can say (24v vs. 12v) I compared both and the 24v just seems a little more complex a motor. Starting to get into the plumbers nightmare. The 12v seems to have a much more simpler layout.

Cheers

I hear L.. but from what I have heard.. 24v is rated to tow 3500kgs and the 12v is rated only for 2500kgs..? better fuel economy from the 24v as well.. more power 24v.. bigger brakes etc.. much better auto but are prone to the same problems as the 12v auto.. 24v need big ends done as does the 12v model.. But for me Im thinking the 24v due to it's 3500kg tow rating along with tweak it and much better performance etc.. Get a auto kit from overseas and rebuild auto, then all good.. but heading towards the 24v at this stage..would love a manual 24v but as they are like rockin horse shyt.. don't like my chances.. tata

if your wanting a 24v for the higher tow rating go have a look at the ltsa/nzta or whatever they call themselves now website you don't have to adhere to a vehicles tow rating you can exceed it but have to comply within the braking requirements towing the load
