Thinking of upgrading to R50

Post by sublimenz »

Been thinking about upgrading the old rano for a newer R50.
Do these have the same weaker steering as the D21 or was that issue solved.
I dont plan on doing any extreme off roading with it just abit of bush bashing and hunting.
Would they be sufficent ?

Not saying they re bad offroad. Just be aware you have macpherson struts instead of wishbones and if you ding in the floor rails, rust etc its all structual... or beach it on the g/b crossmember you risk bending the floor

Yes very comfy. Be aware the qd32 has the fly by wire injector pumps which are known to give trouble.

To put it in perspective, the Nissan unibody is widely considered to be a good amount stronger than the Jeep XJ unibody.

Which is one of the reasons the R50 is so heavy (for what it is).

I looked for a nice 2.8 MU but they seem pretty rare and not really keen on the 3.1 have heard some real horror stories re heads.

R50s probably have even weaker steering, its rack&peanut with tiny looking tie rods. Nice truck for a daily love mine, but would be the first to admit I wouldn't trust it offroad

American's seem to dig em, lot of the NPORA guys to crazy stuff with the R50s.
My mate's Trials truck uses R50 steering setup and it held up when we flipped it 2 1/2 times at round 1 (snapped the rear shock though)

True that, I suppose our biggest problem is with the lengths and amounts of steering rods and how low they hang on a box setup, so R&P may well be stronger. Imagine the rubber rack mounts would help soak up knocks before any things bends too.
