What ratchet crimper to buy

Post by Heath »

I figure that I had better get a better crimper than the masher I currently have for the wiring loom I have to make for my 45 bastard hot rod.

I am retraining to become an electrician (industrial eventually) and figure I will need some decent tools. I already have a pile of stuff that will be good enough for the first few years but dont want to waste money on crap that wont last.

Was looking at

http://www.kiwimotoring.com/store/produ ... g-tool-set

or similar. Any sparkies (auto or otherwise) able to give me any hints on where to buy or even what to avoid?

Yup I've used that exact crimper and would recommend it it's good because it's interchangeable quickly no need to undo screws to change crimps. Also robust case.

and yes I'm a sparky.

I would recommend something like that, just make sure you can get other dies for it, You should be able to get them for RG6/SAT Cable termination / RJ45 / RJ11 / the list goes on. I know a few people who have bought non branded ones and been burned as they couldn't buy the dies they needed.

That is a decent price for a set like that!

to put it in perspective the RJ45 (Network) crimper i just brought for work cost me over $300
the cheaper ones don't cut it and the die's go out of alignment over time .

having said that , for most automotive stuff (apart from battery) I normally pull off the stupid plastic lug crimp outers , throw them away , slide heat shrink over the cable and crimp the lug up with a pair of bull nose pliers. At least then you can see if you got a good crimp and the heat shrink seals the connection .

That's my thinking too. I like to see it is all good before I hide it forever under some heat shrink.

The price was good - too good until I saw exactly the same thing on tardme for less so I bought it. Guess my overtime for last week didnt last long - LOL

That's why I never look for items I've just purchased because you can look and look until you decide on one then after you've bought it you'll find it cheaper.

I have got these ones Find them quick and handy for domestic bits go from 0.5mm2 to 16mm2, but if your getting into industrial chances are your gonna need something bigger like this If your doing cable jointing mainly look at a battery operated one. Gets hard doing 90mm2 lugs for 14hrs.

When I start my apprenticeship (just pre trade at the moment) I get a tool allowance to buy the big stuff. For now I have the one from the link above to do my auto wiring jobs.

For insulated terminals, the ones I use a Hella pair,i think they rrp at around 60 bucks, had them 5 years still going strong (auto sparky) I have a couple different pairs of crimpers for different terminals to prevent changing dies every time

gee you guys are all paying way to much for your tools ...they are all made in china so go direct to china to get them.
Ive brought lots of stuff off http://www.aliexpress.com
Take you time & have a good look before buying as some stuff is better and cheaper than others but at the prices hard to go too wrong.
