Landcruiser swivel housing bolts

After a bit of a shock finding a broken stud, this is a warning for all cruiser owners.

Please check these as they are known for loosening and then snapping the studs. One cruiser owner only had one left.
Hate to think of the consequences.

Yip been there done that. .either keyway or arp studs I think.. which is what I am going to be doing. Shit design when you add big tahs..I only had 1 stud about 1/4 thread in holding it on.. but my knuckle almost came off.. I wss only doing about 5-10ks whwn it wanted to climb a bank.. I was like wtf... anyway turn spanners every time you're out.. what I do now. .

Its strange that the Playdoh has the same setup and I run 35's ... And they have never come loose....
Could it be the full time 4WD in the 80's that add extra load to the swivel hubs.... Rather than just going for the ride in a part time?

Its called maintenance. Everybody that altered their vehicle and then start doing medium to hard track should be checking all bolts and mounts as standard.

The 80 is prown due to the push pull design on the left hub.

That said ive had them become loose on 60 and 70 series when running big tyres coming home with them running out of balance.
Actually ive had a lot of bolts come loose on my 60

Are they for the lower kingpin bolts too ? or just the spline drive flange bolts ? as there are 10 bolts.. one would assume 4 for the lower king to arm bolts.. If so might have to buy some..

Have just taken the nuts off the studs and even the studs are loose. When you tighten the nuts it may seem to have fixed the problem, but check the studs also.
They have a star shaped end which a 9mm socket seems to fit nicely. Not sure if there is a special socket for it.
Now time to drill and easy-out the broken stud.

once the studs start winding out they keep on winding out after you retighten the nuts, you have to clean the studs up and refit them nice and tight with some locktite and everything usually stays pretty tight and snug after that still pays to do a periodic check every so often, excess grease leaking out of the swivel seals is usually a good indication they have come loose again

For now I got a couple of replacements from BJ auto.

They ccome out pretty easy as they would have been loose before they broke off.. All mine were loose so I would just try to get a flat screwdriver in there and try it first.. might surprise ya..

These are only king pin studs and nuts, far to big for the drive flanges.
Fit top and bottom of 40, 60, 70 series landcruisers and top and bottom of hilux.
Only fit the bottom of the 80 series.

Dam close with the screwdriver. Unfortunately the last part of the thread in the housing was a little burred, but the easy-out came to the rescue.
