80 series swivel hub rebuild

Hi guys been 10 years since I've had too do a hub rebuild . My current 97 80 series just ticked over 250000km. Wheel bearings been going loose several times over the last 12 months, pulled them out today , outside races starting fail. Apart from that everything else looks good , cv's look and feel ok , but thinking about replacing them as I don't want too have too pull hubs off again in the near future because of cv failure. Could they be original given the km's? . Been quoted $400 a side for Toyota cv's , whats currently a good well made aftermarket option for cv's? .

waste of time and money replacing them if your cv's are still ok so long as they aren't worn and sloppy they'll be sweet , have a look at the splines and drive flanges if your part time 4wd they tend to wear a bit, if you've got money burning a hole in your pocket that needs to be spent I'm pretty sure trailgear make 80 series longfield 4340 Chromoly CV's I'd be real weary about buying an unknown brand CV if you've already got good jap ones in there good luck with the front end rebuild

toyota or chrome mollys theres only two options for cvs the rest are crap, period!!

imho if the cvs are still nice and firm throw them back in. if you do do a cv further down the track its only 20-30 mins and the hubs off and cv out

Cleaned and washed them out this evening one has guite abit of surface rust and some hardening wear on the balls , there is some play . Leaning towards just replacing them now and keeping them as spares.

I deal with guys at Online all the time, for my own cars and customers.... and have done the same with my 80 series ( full front and rear axle rebuilds with all parts sourced from them, never had a problem with their CV's ( they use GSP branded cv's, and i always ask for Timken bearings ) and my truck gets given arseholes )

If you do a few kms and you haven't converted it to part time 4wd then don't get chromo cvs. Part of what makes them stronger is that they are softer. So won't wear as well as the factory ones. Perhaps best to stick to genuine cvs for a touring type wagon as you obviously aren't having issues with the strength of them.

Well hubs all back together , new tie rod ends... what a difference! Ordered rear bearing kit from http://www.onlineautoparts.com.au/ , same ones as on trademe .
Prices pretty sharp and arrived in 4 days airfreight. Can't fault kit, genuine Timken bearings and good seals . will be using them in future , just freight charges work against them on heavy stuff like brake drums etc .
