24v to 12v converter help

Post by rambo rem700 »

hi guys , I just purchased a 24v cruiser. the guy I got it off told to hook up the amp wire on battery for the sterio to work and it did, however the stereo didn't turn off with key and the converter was permantly going.

it has 3 wires in 24v and 3 wires out 12v, the 24 I was straight off the battery, the other 24 in was straight off the ignition, not off the acc, and I guessing the third was a earth?

im not sure how these are suppose to go, I was thinking maybe a chassis earth and a acc 24v in?

anyone able to help me out???

converters generally have a 24v in earth and 12v out

Most head units, amplifiers need a battery and accessory circuit which can make tings difficult

Wire in a relay via the ignition acc/on positions making the coil 24 volt but the two pins for the switch will be wired in series from the inverter to you 12 volt accessories. Leaving the radio,s memory power wire directly to the inverter... this will circumvent any issues and act like a normal 12 system. We did to one of our 24 volt isuzu trucks

If it has 6 wires total normally you have on the in side 24v constant, 24v acc , ground and on the out side 12v constant , 12v acc, and ground. Hooked a few up in patrols for mates. Best way to get direct answers would be to take a photo of the Unit or list a model

My issue.... as one with a number of years car stereo installation experience.... Don't try and run your Amplifier off a reducer!

What are you actually installing? Your first post is confusing. If your installing an Amplifier, Don't!
If your still trying to install an amplifier, and your using the "Amp" feed on your head unit to drive the reducer, then you have a 24v head unit? if you have a reducer running your 12v stereo, then the 'amp out" supply on the stereo MIGHT produce sufficient voltage to turn on the reducer. Now why its staying on is probably cos of the ghost ships I think you ate before embarking on this voyage of discovery..

Your reducer has 6 wires.. it should be clearly marked what they do, otherwise test with a multimeter. Need more info or you should try looking under auto electricians in the yellow pages!
Dont follow me. i'll get stuck and need a tow..

Just going by wire sizes, I would say the red is memory/ permanent and the yellow is full current/ ACC

Cheers guys, I dropped it off at the auto electrians this mornig, just to get it all tidied up.
Yes he was running and amp off the converter, but I will not be, just a simple head unit off the 12v.
thanks for the replys

Why not run an Amplifier off a converter? Obviously not one that small tho :)
I had one in my Safari. The trick is the factory converter and most cheap 'car stereo converters' are wired backwards in the old style (Batt is memory only, main power is from ACC) modern headunits draw main power from the Batt line, ACC is just a trigger signal (same as an amplifier), so the converters usually aren't capable of delivering enough current on the Batt side (unless you hook them up the opposite way, does work, rewired one in a truck to work like this).
My overly complicated safari setup had the factory converter just supplying ACC signal to head unit and powering gauges, radar, phone charger etc low power devices. A 15A max/12A constant reducer supplying the head unit Batt side and the CB. And a 40A max/30A constant reducer running an amplifier (with a relay allowing the head units 12v remote trigger wire to switch the 24v 'key on' input on the reducer)..that is until some pricks stole it as it was attached to the sub box.
And yes, the reducer for the amplifier was regulated at 13.8v not 12 so the amp is getting the full power it was designed to run on.

In the mean time, I gave up buying 24V vehicles :)
