New Radiator, Thermostat and Trans Cooler for my KZN185
Hi all,
I am looking at doing a bit of preventative maintenance on my truck and have decided to get a decent new radiator, and potentially a external trans cooler and a new thermostat. I have done a alot of searching of old threads etc, so please don't cucify me here as I am wondering if there is any "new tehcnology" that may be better these days. My questions are as follows:
1) Should I simply replace the factory radiator that is in there with another factory one (I hear the KZN185 factory rads are far better than the old KZN130's???). I was looking at this one here: http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-par ... 054246.htm
2) Is it still best to go for a Thermostat that opens at lower temps? I believe people used to put Toyota 72 degrees thermostats in Surfs. Is this still a good option?
3) I know the old KZN130 radiators had the inbuilt trans coolers that caused issues - is this still the case with the KZN185's? Still a good idea to go for an aftermarket one? Was looking at this one here: http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-par ... 504681.htm
Any advice is good advice!
Cheers

Whereabouts are you? I've just done my 1kzte and Fenix Radiators were awesome and very helpful. I went for the bigger radiator that they recommended.
They also do trans coolers but I ended up getting mine (Davis Craig make) from BNT. Only because I didn't know.
I was recommended to go for the lower theromstat too.

Re: New Radiator, Thermostat and Trans Cooler for my KZN185
76 deg genuine thermostat and sealing ring, thickest radiator avail from silverdale radiators (38mm?) And genuine yota coolant. Def bypass rad cooler and go for full external trans cooler. While you're in there service or replace your viscous fan. And if you have time blank off egr and dump pcv to catch can. Best preventative maintenance available for the 1kzs

Re: New Radiator, Thermostat and Trans Cooler for my KZN185
All what he said, except with a new genuine 82 deg thermo and a 34mm prado core from Silverdale I'm running at 76-80deg all the time, at water outlet from block. I don't think you need the 76deg stat, at least not in NZ. If you want the part numbers:
Original Toyota Thermostats
90916 - 03118 *WAX 82-95 stnd in parts listing
90916 - 03119 *WAX 76-90
90916 - 03121 *Wax 71-90
90916-03079 82 deg with larger opening?
Rubber Seal
16346 67010
Don't get Tridon or Dayco, they are cheap crap. The gen prices will surprise you pleasantly.

Hi Wild South
Great to see you have bought yet another 4wd.
Your choice of surf is excellent and the preventive maintenance is a good idea, but you have forgot the most important bit.
$10 tube of silicone in the fan hub. Id spend a few minutes researching that, especially if you are doing any touring or towing.
If you aren't a member of http://www.toyotasurf.asn.au/ you should!

Thanks for all the input guys - much appreciated!
In terms of the Prado radiator, @floatingkiwi, does that just slot in where the factory radiator sits in the 185's? Are the factory thermostats in the 195's 82 deg ones?
Cheers!

Re: New Radiator, Thermostat and Trans Cooler for my KZN185
Just been on the phone to Ilam Toyota here in Christchurch to get an idea of prices. My plan is the following:
- New 76 Deg Thermostat and gasket ($29.90 + $13.90 = $43.80)
- New Silverdale Prado KZJ95 Radiator with 34mm Core ($330 shipped)
- New Silicone tube to re-silicone the hub ($20)
- New Genuine Toyota Red Coolant ($74.75)
ALL UP = $468.65

Just beware there is a modern and an old version of coolant. The older stuff is the one for 1kzs

Re: New Radiator, Thermostat and Trans Cooler for my KZN185
Sorry I missed your earlier question - as you've seen yes it does fit straight in. 82 is standard in the 185, yes. I don't know about the 195....!Wild_South wrote:Just been on the phone to Ilam Toyota here in Christchurch to get an idea of prices. My plan is the following:

Re: New Radiator, Thermostat and Trans Cooler for my KZN185
Re the silicone oil to refill the viscous hub.
I went to Toyota just a few weeks ago for this very same thing.
Their silicone is only 15ml (if I remember right) per tube, but the hub holds 50ml (you really should strip it apart and drain all the old silicone oil out of it).
So, you will need 3 tubes of Toyota stuff and that gets you to 45ml.
Cheaper to go to a model shop and buy 10000cST oil for RC model car diffs.
The same thing but way cheaper.
My 2 x 40ml tubes cost $26.
Try this place...
http://topshelf-rc.co.nz/catalog/index.php
That's where I bought mine from.
Great service, quick delivery.
You can go heavier with the oil, but 10000cST is normal in NZ. Try 12000cST maybe, if you are worried about steep hills, hot weather, towing heavy trailer?

All you need to know really. It's not just all about the 'Blue' clutch fan either. The strip down, and rebuild stuff is the same regardless.
Hope some of this helps.

Bnt also sell viscous fan fluid, 20 bucks or so for 100ml by memory

Re: New Radiator, Thermostat and Trans Cooler for my KZN185
They do but they can't tell you what the (viscosity) rating isskidmark wrote:Bnt also sell viscous fan fluid, 20 bucks or so for 100ml by memory

Yes, they do, but they don't know the cST rating of it.skidmark wrote:Bnt also sell viscous fan fluid, 20 bucks or so for 100ml by memory
I checked with them too (they are local to me), but as they can't tell me what rating the oil is it's not much use.
