1997 Nissan Terrano - violent clunking noise when moving

Hello,

Hoping someone may have some advice. I have a 1997 Terrano 4x4. I use it to tow my boat mostly and as such it doesn't do a lot of k's and can sometime sit for a few weeks.

What I've been finding is after sitting a for a few weeks the rear brake would sometimes seize up (I suspect handbrake) but after a little back and forth (drive - reverse - drive) it would come free.

Today went to get ready for a fish tomorrow. found was seized, did the usual, but it didn;t want to budge. Put in 4wd gave it another go and it came free. Went to take for a drive, pulled out the drive up the road no problems, wne tpo brake to stop and didn't feel right (almost like loss of fluid) and then a violent clunking noise from rear wheels/diff which I could feel feeding back through brake pedal. then went to move of and now a violent clunking noise from rear (worse then a broken LSD - experienced that before) when moving either forward or backward. Handbrake has no tension behind, almost as if the cable was broken.

Any idea? I'm guessing it prob a major and time to throw the Terrano away. Bugger, I was looking forward to a fish too!

yeah the seized up rear brakes have probably fallen apart, pull the wheels off and have a bit of a look and see what you find

Think you may be right, I'll whip them off tomorrow and see what I find.

My monies on the shoe liner has become unstuck and has now jambed itself on the second liner.
It will be a mongrel to take the drum off.

If you can and asuming the adjuster isnt rusted solid. Back the adjuster right off and the handbrake adjuster as well.

Ive had to resort to a cutoff blade on the grinder to get my drums off previously
First follow the outside of the drum so you can pull the center off then attack the circumference face

I would say that the rear brakes are toast. They don't really like salt water.

@Derk haha yeah sort of did really

@mudiva yeah drums can be a real bugger to get off some times. The shoes were replaced about 12 months ago but as @hamboy pointed out they definitely get a lot of exposure to salt water especially as I mostly launch of the local beach.

oh well, big hammer, some heat, and hopefully those drums have a couple of screw holes on the front

Sweet ive had a brand new set of shoes delaminate after parking the toy after a hardas wet run

I had the same thing happen to my playdoh.. handbrake shoe stuck to drum. But I ended up bending a radius arm...
Suggest when you park it up just chock the wheels and leave the hand brake off.....

Nice work guys, you were bang on.

Pads had come away off shoes both sides, one side both were floating around in there the other side one was floating around and the other stuck to the drum.

Thankfully everything else looks all in order and undamaged - Bonus!

Put it all back together and test drove, all good now aside from the degraded braking cause no pads on the shoes, just need to get some new shoes fitted Monday and should be back into the fishing!

It's a beach hack for towing the boat so can't avoid that, but think I just need to drive it more so it doesn't sit for weeks at a time after a run to the beach.

Personally, I would be skimming the drums at least, but I do have a lathe fetish!

I wonder if there isn't a way to prevent a reoccurance? Take it for a drive with the handbrake up a few notches to put some heat into it and dry it out a bit?

Umm, you're driving it with no linings on the shoes?! Might pay to get some new drums (expensive) as well as shoes as steel on steel will score the drums to bits in no time.

To stop it happening again simply leave it in park with handbrake off.

if your parking the thing up not using it or parking it with wet brakes don't stick the handbrake on they always end up seizing on or the shoes rust onto the drum just leave it parked in gear or the wheels chocked as above and you'll have better reliability with the brakes, if your backing it into the tide give the drums and everything else a good hose out with fresh water same as you do to the boat that also helps it live a little bit longer

@slide yeah I wouldn't usually, only to get me to the workshop, wasn't too bad, front brakes did most the work and took it pretty easy I managed to get new shoes, drums machined, fitted, and a new WOF for $300 so was pretty happy with that.

@ Derk yeah mate, think I might just do that. @MihiT The brakes feel really good after the machining. I think just a bit more regular driving and might start unhitching trailer on jockey wheel and using a sort length of rope to launch and retrieve. A little bit of extra mucking around but you can completely avoid backing into the water at all.

it suprises me why boat trailors do not have a sliding box type draw beam where by pulling a pin yon can extend the bar out by a couple of meters so the tow wagon does not need to get in to deep.

must be a reason why but i dont fish so guessing one would ever know...

I have seen on a few Australian 4wd shows they have a longer swing away draw bar that is 2 or so meres longer for launching and retrieving.
