FJ40 "just for bashing"
Re: FJ40 "just for bashing"
Hey man, I'd try and position the front pivot of the tramp bar where the front mount of the leaf spring is. I don't even know how it works at the moment cause it should just jam up looking at it. Also what angle is top UJ on? The bottom one looks straight so if the top one is on an angle it needs to be swapped for a double cardan joint otherwise you fatigue the shite out of your drive train. Another thing you can do is get the diff angle parallel with the gearbox out put angle and this will reduce the vibration unless the angle are very steep.
I though you did a spring over axle conversion on it? The pics dont seem to show it at the back.

Wasn't mig'd was a factory join mate.
Re: FJ40 "just for bashing"
just fitted a 3b and turboed it and added a front mount intercooler. One turbo just won't do it so there will be another one added soon, just for the crack!
Re: FJ40 "just for bashing"
I wouldn't be doing that
.. the 3b doesn't have the oil sprayers that cool the pistons like the 13bt does.. and all you'll do is fk it
.. keep it low psi don't ask for much and it'll go all day everyday.. otherwise get another engine ready..

Re: FJ40 "just for bashing"
I'm fairly sure it does have the sprayers, it's a late Daihatsu built one. Anyway,if it does die then I'll just have to build it stronger next time
The turbo is a tiny thing off a 4d56 and is pretty much spooled up at idle, waste gate is set at 10 psi.
I'm going to run a pair of them in parallel one off 1 and 3 and the other off 2 and 4 to get even pulses and short small pipework to keep the gas speed up.
The ONLY reason for two is because someone said I couldn't do it

Re: FJ40 "just for bashing"
I stuck on a pair of electric fans and made up a cowling to reduce my overheating problem, works a treat.
Twin turbo conversion is ongoing, it runs but I need to finish the intakes and exhaust.

Re: FJ40 "just for bashing"
I've gone back to a single turbo and I had the sump off to fit a drain as I was getting a lot of oil out of the breather with it draining into the tappet chest.
It DOES have oil sprayers as I suspected
I got some snaps of my homemade steering arms too.

The blobs of silicone cover up two 10mm dowel pins that run down ito the knuckle.
More detail of the legacy power rack installation.
You can see the pair of cooling fans in pusher mode so they can't hit the radiators if/when I drown them. I found a cheap winch too:)

Re: FJ40 "just for bashing"
I saw your twin turbo setup in a thread on ih8mud, didn't realise it was a kiwi truck! Awesome stuff
Re: FJ40 "just for bashing"
It might happen again, if I can get it reliable with the single. I'll have to make a different exhaust manifold joining 1 and 3, and 2 and 4. Hopefully that will stop the pulsing.
Its getting hot now, I think the rad might be blocked internally so it will be out for a spot of flushing and/or replacement this week.
I need to sort my electrics too, the stupid glass fuses keep failing and ign relay burnt out last time out on monday

Re: FJ40 "just for bashing"
Made up some new front guards for a mates fj40, they have come out better than my ones
still not a patch on Tom's work though!

Re: FJ40 "just for bashing"
Thoughs guard look good. Might have to borrow that design if I ever redo mine.
Re: FJ40 "just for bashing"
They have passed a tree test much better than the original items, and you can walk on them to hook up a snatch strap after you have drowned your truck without getting much wetter!
Re: FJ40 "just for bashing"
New shocks going in, thanks to Tom's offroad. They are rear GQ +6 inches!
Re: FJ40 "just for bashing"

Is this any better?
Re: FJ40 "just for bashing"
I've been neglecting the 40 as I have been doing the 45 instead but as I have a long weekend on call I have dragged the truck to work and pulled the box out to fix the clutch. Unfortunately it has got a petrol coarse spline plate in it as it's been converted from a 2F to a 3B-T. I should have remembered as I did the conversion! Now I need to find a clutch plate on Easter Sunday
