96 v6 surf
96 v6 surf
might as well start this thread.
96 vzn185 surf, standard, for now.
will be a slow build, as time and money allows.
plan is (no doubt will change)...
sas prado diff with hilux axles surf hubs, prado trailing arms. lokka locker.
ln130 transfer case. (kzn130 in there instead)
rear electric prado locker in rear.(in a 90 series prado diff, so got disk brakes)
change to 4.3 diff heads, from 4.1
35x16 goodride mud legend for road and simex et off.
2 inch body lift.
hopefully lift fuel tank 2 inches.
front 2 inch lifted prado springs/shocks.(wouldn't fit, so factory struts for now, they lifted it 4")
rear standard 80 series springs/shocks.(had to get 4" lifted springs to keep same as front, 2" lifted 80 shocks)
TRD supercharger. URD kit.
snorkel (just a cheap one until the exo gets done).
cross over steering. 70 series? 130 steering box.(80 series box better fit)
take air bags out.
HID head lights, factory aren't that great. (lvvta say can't just change bulbs, got to change whole lamp. )
+++
cert.
save up $.
some bar work, got a 12000lb runva to mount in back for forwards and reverse pulling. will put a 9500lb on front.
twin alternators. two batteries. (front bar done, with 12000 runva in it)
save up heaps more $.
probably a year or two away.
cut cab down behind back seats.?
simple exo cage incorporating snorkel for body protection. winch challenge specs.? might need a 6 point internal cage by the sounds of it?
small rear deck hopefully end up like a ute flat deck ish, for pigs deer, or for carrying dogs, whatever...
rear disk brake conversion. change whole diff or use what? (done)
cert.
at some stage
lights.
pull all carpets out.
transmission cooler.(done)
bead locks.(got stauns waiting)
change front seats and add 5 point belts.
air tank and compressors for tyres.
be more....

Re: 96 v6 surf
you may find it is easier to get a double cab shell with just the rear door's then bolt all you panels/front doors lights n grill etc to it, as you may have the same issue i have coming up.....it is the back seat seatbelt tensioners sit behind the C pillar.
Waiter...there is a drought in my glass.

hadn't looked at that. might end up making it a bob tailed well side.

After watching the videos on the net of them I reckon it would be worth the effort. Gees they are impressive!
Re: 96 v6 surf
ok, transfer case changed to a kzn130 one. wiring not done yet so haven't got 4wd or speedo. get to it one day. had to change to a VZN130 rear driveshaft because 130 transfer is shorter. also the crossmember under the transfer case got moved back to suit the mount.
picked up a 90/95 series prado rear diff so will have rear disk brakes. will fit the electric locker into it sometime, a bit of welding & cutting to come.
started on SAS.

Re: 96 v6 surf
still got to change hubs to surf ones.
didn't realise chassis too wide to use prado springs & shocks, so ended up using the factory struts. bit too hard. its sitting right at bottom of suspension.
see viewtopic.php?f=13&t=44769
also sump isn't going to work, need a rear sump.

If you gonna use the surf front struts. The early sheep shagga ones have the same mounts but give 3 inches of lift

ok, is that if they are mounted on top of diff? the surf ones have given about 5" of lift, but are too hard & its sitting with the springs completely extended. would the shagger ones be softer?

Re: 96 v6 surf
I cant answer that but alot of the 4 runner dudes in the states use them to give them 3 inches of lift.

Re: 96 v6 surf
going to just stick with the factory struts for now and see where it sits once we have added weight to the front. winch bar. winch. supercharger. etc. have ordered 4" lift rear springs to sit it nearer level, and going to use 2" lifted 80 series shocks which are 4" longer than surf ones.
bit more done.
bit more done.

Re: 96 v6 surf
on the trailer back home to get a bit done over xmas.
steering all done, need to get made a power steering hose between pump & 80 series box.
35" mud legends on 80 series rims, will see how they go as road wheels.
waiting for sump pan, then can swap that.
when rear springs turn up then can put prado diff in place.
surf hubs to swap onto it.
thanks for the work Cole, good job.

Re: 96 v6 surf
steering hose made & fitted. getting pretty busy in that small space.
ps cooler fitted, not overly long but hopefully better than nothing.
so now running again, need to fit another windscreen washer tank though, not enough room below drivers side headlight anymore.

Re: 96 v6 surf
As the power steering bloke said to me. You can not have to much cooling. More so when running big flat tyres
Re: 96 v6 surf
mudlva wrote: You can not have to much cooling.
yep, especially after supercharger is fitted.
going to put vents towards both back corners of bonnet, also two 10" electric fans in the bulge in bonnet above supercharger to suck as much heat out as possible when going slow off road. when on road & fans off they will still vent around blades.
tomorrows job swap sump pan & pick up etc to rear sump from a T100. hopefully reasonably simple....

Cool. Interesting use of factory struts. For the spring height issue, have you considered cutting the springs? Ie removing one coil?
How much stroke do the factory shocks have?

have thought of that, but going to wait until we have added winch bar & winch in a couple of weeks, and then hopefully the supercharger. see what that weight does to the front.
lax2wlg wrote:How much stroke do the factory shocks have?
haven't measured them. we were planning on using prado 2" lifted coils & shocks but chassis too wide. the factory struts were the only other things we had sitting there so just put them back in instead.
will see how they go and change them later if doesn't work out.

I wouldnt stress to much about the heat from the supercharger, unless you were having overheating issues before hand.
When I supercharged mine it made no difference at all to how hot it runs offroad.
As long as you have a good radiator I doubt you would have any issues

it has got hot a couple of times but 1st was jammed thermostat, and 2nd was viscous fan stopped working. had to drill 2 holes through hub & bolt solid because we were in middle of nowhere, have replaced hub but hasn't been drivable since.
otherwise it has always been fine, even when towing.
just thought better safe than sorry.
