2.4 leaky seal
2.4 leaky seal
Hi, Im looking to but a 87 surf with the 2.4 turbo diesel. The problem with the old engines I have found is the rear seal leaks, and I looked at one which had blown the motor because of that rear seal. My question is, is this common with the 2.4 and is it an easy fix? or do I have to pull the motor out and pull it to bits etc? I will be using it for off roading so I dont want the engine to blow because of a seal! thanks for any help.

It is comon with all old cars, usualy put up with instead of fixed because most people dont wont to speend the money to fix it. Normaly remove the gearbox and the seal is easaly accessed by removing the fly wheel or flex plate. You dont have to pull the motor down to get to it. A genuwine seal is normaly better than an after market but usualy cost twice as much, if using an after market seal make sure it is the wright compound to run with deisel oil or you will end up doing it all over again.

It doesnt sound too bad then, It looks like I could do it myself. Does an 87 surf have a seperate transfer case or is it integrated into the gearbox like most of them?
it's integrated....but that makes the job easier

have fun... have a go yourself, it's as easy as can be and you'll do the whole job for a song, it will take a day or so if you haven't done one befor but you'll lear and save heaps

P.S you'll probably have to take the gearsticks out from the top before you try to drop the box
I hate signatures
