How do I fit a D21 Nissan Terrano alloy bash plate?

Post by maniac57 »

I have also posted this in the Tech Section - apologies for duplication - perhaps a moderator can remove one of the posts as I only stumbled across the Nissan Forum.

I have a 1991 D21 V6 manual Terrano and have just purchased some alloy skid / bash plates from another D21 Terrano.

I have a problem in that they do not appear to fit without some work being required (not a problem) and some additional bits and pieces, however I do not have an exact idea of how they are supposed to fit so was wondering if anyone out there has fitted similar, or has instructions etc to do so.

Many thanks

Looks to me like it should be on my Diesel Terrano, give it to me and I will fit it to mine.
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

Is that your truck in pic?
May be tricky to fit depending on design of lower area of your front bar.
The 3 holes at top of pic bolt up to where factory tin bash plate goes (so "terrano" can be read looking at front of vehicle). Mine I had to make brackets for the rear mounts. I don't have the alloy transfer bash plate, so unsure how they bolt up.

Yep that's my truck. The 3 holes still line up with the old steel bash plate holes as the lower front bar is about 150 mm in from of the original mounts.

I was wondering if I might have to make brackets for the rear mounts as I am concerned the A-arms may not drop down enough otherwise. Weird as it came off a D21.

I'll check it out over the weekend.

Hey mate I have one on my truck and so I know just what to do.
The terrano it came from had an angled bracket that the original pan used to bolt to. These had a nut welded on the back with a 8mm thread.
So what your thinking is right. I have had the torsion bars out of mine and it dropped so low the cv would not turn and it doesn't hit

Hi, I too have one.
Mine came with a steel bracket for the trailing end, which from memory mounts to the frame where the T-bars are attached. Its 100-150mm tall, and has big round 'weight saving' (mud clearing?) holes in the vertical face of it. Could be a whole lot stronger IMO. There's meant to be a middle mounting point too (the two slotted holes in the bash plate). I asked the guy who sold it to me, but he was adamant there was no separate bracket at that point. I think he suggested the trans cross member is a whole different item on truck fitted with these. Seems unlikely, as that would be much harder to change for fitting what was obviously an optional accessory. I'll take a photo and measurements of the bracket later. Also have some measurements of the space to the cross member at the middle. Haven't finished this bracket yet, but just going to stack a small box section and a couple of pieces of flat bar as the gap is not too big - will tap thread in to cross member to suit.

If anyone comes across one of these plates, can you let me know as I want to replace the heavy steel ones I have.

Here's some dimensions of bracket fitted at trailing end. I think the row of small holes are closest to back end of truck. written dimensions on paper are for making centre bracket.

No worries.
Actually, I'm quite keen to make a copy of that transfer case shield - never seen that one for sale 2nd hand. Any chance you could post up the dimensions?

I again think some manufacturing will be required.

Nice one, thanks man. :D

Just a couple of Qs:
1) Could you measure the overall length of the panel (as it would be if flattened out), I assume the 390mm is length taking shortest path between front and back edges? Easier to order exact size of aluminium plate that way
2) The 22m space under the panel - is that the same at the crest of the other 'ramp' to the right? Looks (but probably just camera perspective) like the space is smaller.

Now we just need Wax (or someone) to show us the story with the middle support on oil pan skid plate...

1 - Overall length of panel is 400 mm - possibly 405 mm (I had to measure about 6 times to make sure I wasn't seeing things)

2 - Believe it or not it was just camera perspective - the space is the same - 22 mm

So have you made your own brackets? or are you going to? I mightbe interested if you are.

Thanks again.

I'm making the middle support out of a bit of box section and flat bar - stacked, and bolted through. It's the easiest/cheapest way I can think of without access to a welder.
Not sure about the transfer skid plate. Depends on distance to mount points and strength of those points how I tackle it. I have one same as attached photo, but never even tried fitting it. I think its also a factory option, as my rano never originally had one.

Hi everyone,

I have recently purchased a Nissan terrano Skid Plate ( see pic below :) )

I am currently wondering if i made a mistake with the purchase.
Can somebody please tell me what the exact requirements are to mount this bash plate to the bottom of my 95 D21 Diesel terrano.
The seller has said it comes with a rear mounting bracket.

I have heard about a middle bracket that is necessary but then I have also heard that it isn't necessary. The Plate hasn't arrived yet so i cannot try it out.

Thank you so much in advanced and any help is appreciated. :)

Also if anyone has one of these plates, a couple of pictures of how it is mounted would be very helpful. Thanks everyone! :D :)

I have also picked up one of these plates out of a mates shed, he had no idea how/what it mounted.

Does anyone have one of these factory fitted? See a few of these bash plates floating around now and not a lot of them actually fitted..

Be interested in getting the factory mounting brackets req'd off a wreck (if they exist) and fitting this thing 8)
