Toylux Project/Build

Post by toylux »

Hey guys, have had my hilux for couple months now, had heaps of fun in it until couple weeks ago the plus t 3L run a bearing.
Has brought a time for change seeing as previous owner had it lifted but its quite stiff in the suspension.
Thinking to get it back out n about to save up n do 1kz swap with manual pump and have motor future proofed as dont want to go petrol.
Also the tray is up for sale as building a good wee flat deck set up at work. (Apprentice engineer so nothing impossible on the truck, more fab work the better!)
And after going tough a few build threads, going coil in the rear end like tufflux's build.

Anyone have any suggestions on diffs etc? as would like to change front to coil in future to.

cheers

if your trying to soften the ride up get rid of those 1000 ply creepy's those things are harder than bricks especially on a light truck even at 1-2 psi :D

Yeah will end up doing so. Found them not that great in the mud although the 3l didn't have enough guts to spin them clear. Great thre down the selwyn in soft stones and deep river crossing though 37x14,5 creepys don't bog into stones much.

If you want some ideas on how to coil it, look at toms offroad thread heaps of coil jobs in there.

Or another good read is Bulletproofs hilux thread, that thing has taken a bashing and is what i consider very well setup/tough truck.

Leaves are generally just harder, you could do a ruf conversion with high steer but if your thinking coils i would just bite the bullet and coil the whole thing.

You can keep the diffs and just coil it that way, add some reinforcement to them. But if you plan on keeping the big wheels axles and cv's may be come more of a issue if you have a lead foot.

With the massive wheels it will be hard for the 3l plus t to push if the diff ratios arent high enough, you would want 4.88 at least for 37's.

Wise words. 35"+ rubber & hilux CVs/diffs don't usually play well together  If you are doing a coil conversion you may as well swap in some stronger axles. Nissan Patrol/Safari stuff is common, very strong & cheap. Lots wider though, which is great for stability but requires some big flares. One thing you'll need to work around on the Nissan axles is the lack of handbrake - I've heard they are getting toey about retrofitted driveline handbrakes for cert. Try and get as many bits as you can off the donor vehicle - suspension & steering arms, driveshafts, brakelines etc. Talk to a certifier before you launch into the project about what they want to see. Be sure to post some pics!

If it breaks, build it stronger.
If it doesn't break, drive it harder.
