My Surf with 1UZFE failed to start the other day, pulling the fuel link from the filter to the fuel rail showed air pressure but no fuel.
Connecting a new line to the pump outlet running down to the ground gives virtually no fuel at all after 20 seconds of cranking.
Pump sounds fine. The Surf is an ex 2.4 Diesel with the original tank. Gauge shows 1/3 tank but I added another 5L just to be safe.
Any thoughts on where to from here?

Have you made any modifications to the pickup in the old diesel tank?
and where have you mounted you EFI pump?
EFI pumps dont like having to suck and they need the same size inlet hose and pick as the input into the pump itself.
usualy 1/2 inch at the least.
I swaped my old diesel tank for a V6 EFI tank which has the pump already in it.
It fed my EFI chev just fine so it should be ok for your 1UZ.

As mattman found out, they do have a little bit of trouble self priming when above fuel level...
it is under full load that the ill effects of a poorly fed EFI pump will be noticed,
perhaps a bit of a lean out which is usually a bad thing.
Theres a good reson why the feed to tthe EFI pump is 1/2" in size.
the V6 EFI tanks also have the pump mounted in a swirlpot in the center of the tank which is magic for running on big angles with low fuel.
I used to run out of oil presure before the engine ran out of fuel presure on a step down hill.
